According to the stories in the news, he wanted to slow down the process only for Muslim claimants.
Are we holding Muslims to a higher standard?

We don't make a fuss when Chinese hijack airplanes and crash them into buildings.
We don't make a fuss when South Koreans bomb buses and subway trains.
We don't make a fuss when Tamils attack the House of Commons.
We don't make a fuss when E.I.'s gun down a bunch of cartoonists.
We don't make a fuss when Portuguese bomb a marathon.

Yes. Because they are the ones that have the greater need for diligent security checks. Sorry but that's the reality. By going with Christians, Kurds and other minorities fleeing first you can actually expedite more applications faster.

Reducing the checks is not an option imo.
Are you suggesting that the Kurds have an unimpeachable history of refusing terrorism? And do you legitimately think every Muslim should be considered a terrorist unless proven otherwise?

Can you supply a link where a Kurdish organization has threatened terrorist acts against Canada? Or where they have attempted to organize a terror attack in Canada.

Because I sure as hell can for a few Muslims from the region.

So the answer is the percentage chance is a lot lower. And that's good enough for me. I don't give a rats ass if you think that's not PC. Seriously I don't. As long as we can only take so many why shouldn't we pick as we please.

The deadliest terrorist attack in canadian history which killed hundreds of people was organized by east indian sikhs who weren't muslims. Indian prime minister complained to Harper that Canada is hosting radical sikh groups which might turn violent
Also you forgot about Quebec separatist terrorism in the 70's.
Also don't forget the threat of white supremacists groups who were involved in several shootings in the US the last few years , just south of the border, targeting a jewish center, sikh temple ( mistaken with a mosque) and black church killing dozens of innocents
Even the RCMP has stated that right wing extremists are as much a danger for terrorism as any other group.
Strange how Harper hasn't put out calls on right wingers, eh?

If I remember correctly, it was related to the Golden Temple incident in India. Just goes to show that an incident far away can have repercussions in Canada. All the more reason why we should be careful who we allow into our country.

Yes, we have more than enough home grown maniacs and don't need to import more from abroad.

Showing there are other nuts out there does not justify opening the door wide open to an area with more than its share of religious fanatics and violence.

We can help, however lets do it on our terms and ensure we are not importing people who will harm others.
It is not that unreasonable an expectation of our government

What is more important to you, protecting the lives of all Canadians or appearing politically correct?

That's funny you're talking about Muslims as if it was an ethnicity or a nation but forgot that the majority of kurds are muslims.
Moderate ones who actually prefer a secular gov't. Aren't those the ones we keep hearing about so as not to judge all Muslims?

It's some of the ones from Iraq and other places that can be worse. Aren't we allowed to pick who we want?

I'll take the moderates thank you.

Shit, what about the Orangemen and their UDA?...
Are you saying Harper should be cracking down on the Irish too (and throw in some Catholic militias to be fair)?

The PKK are still active terrorists. They are suspects in the suicide bombings in Turkey yesterday.

p.s. As pointed out, the majority of Kurds are Sunni Muslims though some are Shia.

Iran is a theocracy but most of iranians who live here in Canada prefer a secular government. Actually most of iranians I met here in Canada are either atheists or irreligious.
I agree. It's why they came. after being properly vetted by both the UN and us.

That's all I'm saying. Properly vett and don't bypass security checks. And that takes time.

And if you want to expedite then fine. But that means catagorizing by various criteria. Age, sex, family status, previous residence, religious affiliation, and I'm sure others.

Take in women and children. Take in families together. Happy to see them.

Key word highlighted.

You mean other than being signatories to the UN Convention on Refugees?
That should not supersede our right to ensure we are not welcoming dangerous people into our country.

After Jimmy Carter welcomed all who wanted refuge from Cuba, Castro emptied his jails & Miami turned into a shooting gallery.

There will be ISIS sleepers in that mass of refugees. It is as close to a mathematical certainty as is possible.
It is prudent to stop take a breath and ensure we are not repeating the same foolish mistake Jimmy did.

We have every right to pick and choose who we want, we also have the right to change the rules whenever we want.

Absolutely, every country has the right to pick and choose who they want, but do you think it would be good for the reputation of Canada as an open and fair country not accepting refugees because they are muslims or pick refugees based on their faith ? And how do we pretend defending vulnerable christian minorities if we have an official policy not allowing Muslim refugees ?
Well said.

Good for him. Immigration is not an issue to be rushed.
I have to agree with this. I'm uncomfortable with this overwhelming desire to rush into taking tens of thousands of immigrants in.

I guess Germany will be the real test bed for what happens when you open the flood gates.

My understanding of the Kurdish history in Turkey is that it is long and sad. The Turks have been oppressing and killing Kurds forever. The PKK is a reaction to that oppression.Of course, the Turks will blame the PKK for the twin suicide bombings yesterday (true or not). Query: Weren't most of the victims Kurds?

And ISIS claims they are acting against those oppressing Islam.

Yes the Kurds (and the Tamils) have drawn the short stick but their choice to embrace terror attacks against civilians is still unacceptable in my eyes.
