I read somwhere last week, a US military dude was quoted in saying that "China would wipe us out" if they ever got into a war, and that brings me here.

What are you thoughts? You think they'd win? Tough call:

Nukes (let's hope just even 1 isn't used)
US = 12 000
China = 400

Military personnel (active and reserve)
US = 1.4 million
China = 2.5 million

Air combat force (Top Gun)
US = 7500
China = 4350

Naval force (Village People anyone?)
US = 280
China = 170

These are just some of that stats, all in all, looks like the US overpowers China in all aspects except personnel, and that's where China will have the advantage. All they hafta do is pull a Hitler and invade and wipe out neighbouring nations for strategic deployment and stuff.

But China isn't stupid, they know they stand to make themselves much richer than Western Nations and they won't wanna jeopardize that. They're business people and when you're told you're bascially controlling the world's economy (see how much the US was begging China to change their method of currency exchange and control) they know they will come out on top.

Some questions occur to me about China. Whith the Industrializtion of China and wealth that has followed. What percentage of the Chineese people live above the poverty level by western standards? What percentage of the people are able to have secondary education? A general infrastructure, such as sewers, municipal water and electric has reached what percentage of land mass? War lords controls what portion of the countries population? And How many people voted in the last election?

Seems I might expect an internationaly supported civil war in China, first.

Depends on where the war is fought.

In the air and at sea the US wins, but if it's a ground war in Asia well that's not good for the good old US of A.

It would also be helpful if the President at that time wasn't a complete idiot.

Sincerely

China is far smarter then that too start a war with the US. With the recent industrialization of China and their boom in economic power, China has at least 25-50 years of prosperity, making money and dominating the world's economy. They will stock up, buy all the world's resources, and eventually control the world's economic flow. The US is already in huge trade deficit with China, and owes China lots of money. And this is only the beginning. Wal-Mart just opened its first store in China, and that is the first of many.

It was once said that China will wait, wait until Taiwan re-unites, and form the so-called "United States of China". (China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macua, Tibet) When this happens, in the next 50-100 years or so, that will be the time when China will be the next superpower.

I dunno, so much to be said on this topic.....

The War is now being waged. It's called Economic Warfare.
The battleground are the oil rich but politically weak countries.
Venezuela and Sudan are already siding with China.
Wanna bet Saudi Arabia's royal family falls within 5 years
and China locks up that oil pool of a nation.
I don't know, first of all unless you're suggesting taking the oil who has agreements with who it a bit meaningless, as long as you can afford it you can buy it. We have strong relationships with Canada, Mexico and Saudi Arabia, in addition to producing quite a bit of oil domestically, puts us in fair shape going forward.

Heaven, definately Heaven
The US would win, because if any such war were to take place, and it won't, it would be China vs China, not China vs the USA. China could just take Taiwan, but they don't. And they won't.

Kissenger says that a 200 Year old USA cannot dictate to a 5000 year old China. But he purposely neglects to mention a 225 Year old US government can talk to a ~60-70 year old Chinese government with communist collapses of the Soviet Union, starving Koreans and Cubans, arrested Slobodan's and Huessins, and Iraqi and Iranian "skirmishes".

All we need is 30 day USA tourist visas upon border entry and I'll go to China every month. Plus all the pretty girls in China who know how to massage well. It really all comes down to the HJ and release and that is why the USA and China will never go to war.

Actually GYAOS... that's exactly why the US will go to war with China... they're so faithful to their morals that they'd do whatever to curb the sex and pirating that we've all come to love... since it's affecting North America so damned much.

It is instructive to look at the post Katrina price spike. What happened was that the doom sayers were wrong again. Today regular was 93.4 - less than pre Katrina. Simply, when they jacked it to 134, we stopped use of the family cars and started walking for nearby things. As did many others - the market spoke.

Take that a bit farther and it will lead to restructuring. America can deregulate, add nuclear and move much closer to self sufficiency. What is insane is the burning of oil in fixed generation plants - oil is most useful as portable fuel.

BTW come one come all you big American energy companies. We got a Saudi in untouched sands waiting for the development cost.

..if WW3 ever happens were all screwed. My big worry would be a nod nod wink wink War. Ala 1984, where the two elites in both countries thought a nice little war to eliminate some undesirables and boost the economy might not be a bad idea. Luckily for the rest of us , the Elites can never get along.

Not so, the only major WW would be cultural!
If nations are able to get by this touchy issue, borders will disappear even faster than before and Multi nationalism & Globalizations will transcend almost all political, economic and geographical boundaries into one global market.
Transnational corporations will be the prime influence on the nation states from USA to China Sea, which almost certainly makes waging old fashion wars unaffordable, if not impossible!

..the idea Corporations are the answer is not very reassuring.I am an accountant, corporations only care about the bottom line, period. The problemns of the world have been greatly enhanced by the spread of Corporations.

I believe Karl Marx & Lennin wrote extensively on the above topic on their critique of unbridled corporate Capitalism.
They warned If left unchecked the end result would be two classes, the rich and the poor.
I'm sure that our own ex-commie Truncy, can shed much more light of this subject..... ;)

On WW3 between US & China there would be no winner, the whole world would lose, it would go Nuclear without a doubt.

From your comments I am judging, that you have no real idea on how communism worked in the real world.

Communism much like capitalism has created two class of people. The rich and the poor.
If you touted the partie line and you were a "functionaire", your life was great. Their lifestyle is(was) the same as any "rich", in a capitalistic system.

The major difference between the two is, that capitalism rewards hard work, while on the other hand communism rewards mediocrity.
Ever had to wait 5 year for a car? Only to be rewarded with a Trabant? Or wait two years for a dishwasher, which had the quality level of a second hand?
Or waited in a bread line?

my guess is NOT. Communism sounds great on paper(maybe), but the reality never lived up to it's promise.
Unlike you i have seen and experienced it first hand. I take a capitalist society over a communist society ANY DAY!!!

China can't invade

The problem with the scenario is that China has no means of invading another country, unless it has a land route to do so.
China has NO blue water navy... yet.
They are now reverse engineering a russian aircraft carrier and are also comissioning their own. The have little to no amphibs to carry the troops to another shore. Their navy is second rate at best. The technology used in their ships, tanks, and aircraft are all reverse engineered types from other countries. Mostly Russian.
The US has shot themselves in the foot by supplying weapons and support equipment to them since the 70's when Nixon opened up economic ties.
But until China can carry their troops accross the pond the topic of invasion at least is mute.
Nukes are a different story. The U.S. has instituted a limited first strike posture.

Read "The Bear and the Dragon" by Tom Clancy

China has the man power but the US has the fire power.

War isn't all about numbers. It's also about logistics and technology. In both those cases, the US has China beat hands down.

The US has such powerful conventional weapons that nukes are unnessessary.

We're all forgetting about space weapons. I believe that the US is deploying space weapons.
