Got to be be careful whenever a member of the clergy apologizes. The statement he initially made was that some youth may have "seduced" some priests. Even if that were true, an adult has the repsonsibility to know better.

As a punishment I think they are going to make this guy move to another parish... that seems to be the norm.

This holy father clearly has serious bishop potential, if not cardinal potential. Let's hope they fast track him.

He apologized. How nice. Too bad he didn't have a lobotomy to change how totally fucked up his thinking is. Oh and that of the National Catholic Register as well.

Why isn't this guy opening up a new church in Antartica?

Yeah the spin I heard is that the guy is 78 years old and basically getting dementia. He was specifically defending football coach Jerry Sandusky. Whatever.

So you want him to get a lobotomy for 'saying' something stupid, however despicable it is, and then apologizing for it, nice. Talk about thought police There is a much more serious problem in what he may have done in the past, but those that are posting all this hatred in this thread can't see it.

From what I understand he hasn't been sent a way to another parish, but has broken his hip and is under care, unless of course some of you know differently

Talking like a pedophile is a far cry from saying something stupid. Unfortunately he spoke from his heart, he's a sick fuck.

He may have spoken from his heart and that is the problem I spoke of earlier. He may have, as a senior priest, given similar guidance to other priests who sought his advise at his retreat and spread his thoughts, but unless someone comes forward and says he accosted them or told them it was okay to accost young people, then there's no proof that he did anything criminally wrong. So, should he be lobotomized or thrown in jail on suspicions? Most on TERB are barely in their middle age and have little idea what it's like to be 80. He definitely did wrong by letting such incendiary thoughts be heard and he may think what he said is true, yet he said differently later, but we don't crucify people for what they think yet.

I don't know if the church can or will 'demoted' or defrock him for these comments, but i my mind the best you can expect might be what is known as being shunned by as many as possible. That may not sound much but you should talk to those who sentenced top shunning in various communities. It can be devastating.

There is a lot of shame the abused carry after being sexually assaulted. Especially with a case like this their names would become public knowledge along with what happened to them. The chances of people coming forward are slim. These victims suffer in silence.

That being said, I'm sure you would feel differently if it was your son or daughter that could have been or was assaulted.

What you see as spin, I presume most of us see as a statement of the facts.

Frankly, I believe he was doing the far from unknown even among the secular "everyone deserves a second chance" without having really thought out what he was saying.

At least give him credit for promptly admitting when the interview was questioned that what he had said was indefensible, rather than stonewalling about it.

I was educated in the UK in a residential Catholic school run by Jesuit priests and Xavierian brothers. Fortunately there was no hint of abuse in that fine school. I cannot imagine the horror of being trapped in that sort of ugliness. Down through the ages, IMO, the Catholic church has a great deal to answer for, yet has been tardy or entirely negligent in coming forward. A contradiction for an organisation that embraces Confession. And not entirely on the same page as parts of the New Testament.

Little known Bible facts. St Paul was not an apostle but wrote 70% of the New Testament and never met Jesus. There were 13 apostles. Mathias replaced Judas.

My thoughts have been clearly stated in past threads and you may have not read them. Although not sons or daughters, people very close to me have been victims on 'both' sides of the argument, so I do have a very good understanding.

No, I haven't read your prior posts. I respect your viewpoint and was just stating mine. I have knowledge in this area as well and I wouldn't have commented otherwise.

I'm not suggesting he be prosecuted or lobotomized anymore than the US politician be prosecuted or lobotomized for talking about "legitimate rape". What should happen to him for saying that? Well honestly I really don't think anything should happen to him, as you said we can't start prosecuting people for saying stupid shit.

All I'm saying is something is wrong with him to make such statements, in my mind his thoughts are those of a pedophile. I would not go to a church where he preached (if I were inclined to attend any type of church services) and I wouldn't let any kids near him. I wouldn't be surprised if we were to learn he has a seedy past.

Fair comments. One interesting point is, and the lawyers on TERB might offer their legal thoughts. I also miss Nikki (?) and her insights on abnormal psychology. Are you a pedophile if all you do is think/fantasize about it?

I hope that is one thought that never creeps into my fantasy rich mind. Would the answer to blackrock's question be are you gay if you have fantasized about a member of the same sex?

Sort of, except that being gay is not criminal in most of the advance cultures.
