Check Ebay for great deals on printer ink cartridges.

Depending on your purpose, if your printer is more than 1 year old & you want a better quality printer, then just buy a new one.

I usually just buy a new printer and give the old one away. HP's are the best printers but their cartridges are the most expensive. Epson cartridges are cheaper and so are their printers, usually you can find the cheapest epson for about $80, the same price as the cartridges.

As an alternative you can go to those booths in some malls that refill your ink cartridge, they stick a needle in it and refill it. Runs about $15-$20 each for HP's, but because the ink is not the manufacturer's, there may be possible printer damage (clogged heads, etc). Your choice.

After paying over-inflated prices for ink cartridges for years, I finally wised up and switched to remanufactured cartridges, virtually the same product except these cartridges are recycled, but they have been professionally cleaned, filled with high quality printer ink, and tested. Most of these sites stand by their products w/ a no-hassle return policy plus making ink cartridges isn't exactly brain surgery so I wouldn't worry too much if I were you. You can also buy refill kits but those offer only marginal savings and aren't really worth all the trouble. Chk out http://www.dealcatcher.com/coupons~view_type=1~category=7 for even more savings.

Sheik: Why be concerned about voiding the warranty on a $20 printer? If you can save $20 per cartridge, you'll soon have enough to buy a new printer if the old one breaks.

You work for HP, don't you?

A friend of mine let me borrow this kit that he had purchased that let him refill vertually all types of cartridges. All I had to do was by the ink which is easily available. The cartridges were from HP and approx. $40 each.

Well, it only partially worked. I would have to say it was ok only 50% of the time and the rest just didn't work properly. Add to that the time it took to refill them and to me at least, it wasn't worth it.

If you are just an occasional user of the printer, then by all means use the recycled ones. But I would not recommend using them if you are a heavy user.
Personally, I've have never had any problems w/ remanufactured cartridges and I've even heard of companies switching to remanufactured laser toner cartridges with no mishaps. Still, I agree that this is a somewhat grey area; the remanufactured cartridge makers claim that the printer companies cannot void the warranty under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Improvement Act while the printer companies are saying otherwise. As far as I know there have been no independent tests proving or disproving the reliability of these remanufactured cartridges. Another thing to note is that even if the remanufactured cartridge does mess up your printer, the printer company still has to prove that the remanufactured cartridge caused it; I seriously doubt that HP, Epson or Lexmark is going to be that hardnosed about denying the warranty based on so little proof (Hey, its not as if you set the printer on fire and extinguished it by pissing on the flames). I just bought a Canon i320 printer. It was cheap to buy, found some good reviews for it online, and the replacement cartridges are cheap (compared to other printers).

I understand that Dell is getting into the printer market, which is good news, HP needs some competition to bring the prices down. Dell pc's are low priced compared to HP's, Compaq's and IBM's, they will very likely market their printers in the same cost-effective fashion.

I have been buying from CanadaInkJet for several months now. I have an Epson C60 - the cartridges cost $13.00 or $14.00 each instead of paying $50.00 for the Epson brand name or $30.00 for the generic brand at Business Depot. Free delivery over $60.00 - shipped from Vancouver (no customs duties or PST).

Edit: I just noticed that they don't supply HP compatible cartridges - only the ink refill kits.

Info Regarding Office Printers

For those of you who work in offices where you have several workstations connected to each printer, you can reduce costs by having the print jobs re-routed to the photocopier.

It is much cheaper (approximately $0.02 vs. $0.06 per page) to run your print jobs through the photocopier. Plus, your photocopier is more than likely on a fixed service agreement, so wear & tear is already covered.

Depending upon the size of your office, you can save a lot of bottom line costs by doing this.

Remember that many companies are willing to give you an excellent deal on a printer because they make their money on the printer cartridges.

They have also been known to fall apart and permanently ruin your printer.
