Bush's Speach Today

He almost looked comfortable in front of people, one of the few times he did a good job delivering a speach. I think he will end up over achiving the low expectations the Democrats have for him and look (as suprising as this sounds) good during the 85 debates we're going to have to endure during this way-too-long election.

He came out swining in defence of free trade, which is exactly what he needs to do (Rove has him on the right track as usual), said that America lost 1 million jobs in the 3 months after 9/11! I guess 9/11 is an election issue after all, if you want your job then we had better protect this country.

He did a nice job and was exactly on message - it's going to be close but if he keeps this up he'll get the second 4 years his father should have had.

I remember now it was the Human Resources Development Canada scandal of 2 years ago and it ballooned to over a billion dollars. http://www.parl.gc.ca/37/3/parlbus/chambus/house/debates/012_2004-02-17/han012_1110-E.htm

This was also under Chretien's watch.
I did go over the top by calling Martha a bithc so I'll give you that one.

Can you imagine this: A billion dollars disappears and noone is held accountable?? Not one person is arrested or sent to jail.
We either have an entirely incompetent RCMP force or an entirely corrrupt government. Take your pick.

I think that anyone who really knows anything about Martha would safely put her in the *itch category. Don't wimp out, call em as you see em.

The sponsorship scandal was ~ 250 million or so. The gun registry was the billion dollar black hole.

There have been terminations and with the ongoing investigation it is very likely that arrests will follow.
Dont forget the Human Resources scandal of 2 years ago, Tom.
Terminations are no deterrent.
There were no arrests over the HRD scandal and I dont expect any arrests this time around. It's all a big facade.

Dear Leader doesn't have a deal. Where were you hiding when Bush made the famous speech, notifying three parties that they were placed on the Axle of Evil?
I once owned a Ford that had an Axle of Evil. Damn thing had the worst suspension there ever was.

I'm referring to ALL the scandals under Chretien. Starting with that billion dollar scandal of 2 years ago. I dont remember the name but it was a female mp that was under investigation.
You are referring to the HRDC boondoggle. There was no evidence of corruption there (unlike the sponsorship scandal) - just staggering incompetence. That in no way excuses what happened - heads should have rolled - but it wasn't criminal.

The "female MP" that you allude to was Jane Stewart, the cabinet minister responsible for the HRDC for most of that time period.

and now this scandal plus I almost forgot about the gun registry.
Again - you're mixing bad spending with criminal actions. They aren't the same.

I also know damn well that the Enron people have nothing to do with government
Well, that show's how totally ignorant of the Enron scandal you are. The ties between Enron and the GWB government are staggering. Does the name Karl Rove ring a bell?

Given your general level of ignorance on this issue, probably not.

but my point was that americans arent afraid of locking up the rich and powerful
Prove it, because Enron sure the hell doesn't demonstrate that point.

Re: DJK

That's because Bush is sincere - rare material for a politician and a big asset, after all nobody can criticize him for not doing the things he talks about.

Heh, Clinton as used car salesman indeed - good one. I recall some writer somewhere called him a flim-flam man ... heh :D

Say what you will about Bush (and I could criticize a plenty) but he believes what he believes and he does what he says he's going to do. It's a weird experience after that used car salesman Clinton.

I agree with Johnnyhandsome...this 'investigation' is a facade. Martin surely knows that his efforts to pin responsibility soley on the political appointees are transparent. The responsibility lies with the government in power.

Canada must be the easiest country in the world to govern...a country full of sheep.

We need massive political reform in this country. Proportional Representation would be a good place to start.

It's time to storm the gates of Ottawa! Citizens...to arms!

There's nothing like a hanging in the morning to get the government's attention.

Shake,

There are no proven ties between Enron and Dubya. again YOU prove that there is or dont come up with baseless points, please.
Also the Jane Stewart and gun registry "incompetence" borders on being criminal IMHO, just because they were unable to prove anything means that perhaps Chretein et al simply covered their tracks superbly. And tell me please how on earth could a gun registry cost $ 1000,000,000 ???? It's very suspicious!!

Baseless?

Not according to ABC:

Selected quotes from the above:

Enron and its executives went on to become the largest source of financial support for Bush's gubernatorial campaigns, giving more than $500,000
Enron CEO Kenneth Lay has been a friend of Bush and the Bush family for years. When Gov. Bush ran for president, Enron gave him access to a company jet.
Since 1999, Enron and its executives have given more than $2 million to the Bush campaign and other GOP causes.
Lay served on the Bush transition team and helped interview candidates for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, which oversees the gas pipelines and electricity grids that are key to Enron's business.
The president's chief economic adviser, Larry Lindsey, and the top trade negotiator, Robert Zoellick, both served as advisers to the company. Secretary of the Army Thomas White was an Enron executive before joining the administration. When he assumed the Army post, White was forced to sell more than $25 million in Enron stock, according to a financial disclosure form he filed.

I think both scandals are disgusting - you won't find a defender of the Chretien government in me.

But they are fundamentally different from the Sponsorship Scam which, from my perspective, appears to be a case of outright fraud and theft.

And mark my words, a year from now there will still be no criminal charges, noone goes to jail and there may be a few fall guys/girls that will simply lose their job. Like the VIA rail boss.
Martin will say: "look people we fired the morons that caused this scandal and now our govt has been cleaned up". It's the same as what the Metro TO police chief did last year when he did all those reprimands after the Constable Cooper criminal trial. Fantino made it look like he had cleaned up the force which IMHO was another facade.

I'll tell you what if, within the next year, ther have been SIGNIFICANT criminal charges against high political players then I will concede and say I was wrong on this one.
And you can scold me on it!!
I'll be waiting.

Sadly, we're in agreement on this.
