Instead of a random 12 needle cross section across your prostate, the MRI is used to direct the needle(s) towards a detected tumour or nodule. The false positive and false negative rates from traditional biopsies are quite high, as the needles can either miss a malignant nodule, or detect a cancerous nodule that is not going to cause any problem before something else gets you in your later years.
