If you recall, on Independence Day of Ukraine, it was confirmed by both sides that Ukrainian commandos had raided Crimea and hoisted the Ukrainian flag. Both sides reported a firefight. Russia revealed no information on casualties, Ukraine said it had taken none and inflicted very few. By all accounts, whatever contact has occurred, it seemed to be nothing significant. But the operation as a whole was certainly significant. (For those interested in history, I think this was based on Operation Collar).

Most people who read about it saw this as an act of defiance and a bit of a prank. Certainly from all the OSINT coming from the Russians, they didn't get the significance at all. It was a proof-of-concept and a test of their special forces. There is no doubt that whatever their objective was, it wasn't to fly a flag.

Whatever the underlying mission was on Independence Day, it almost certainly, in my opinion, was designed to also send a message that Ukraine can strike them behind the line almost with impunity, something the Russians didn't think Ukraine could do. A message that Russian didn't seem to have recieved or understood at the time. But I think they're starting to.

There have also been a series of attacks with newer Ukrainian Neptune missiles combined with drone decoys, another change in tactic.

Ukraine crowns a week of military successes with a 'significant' tactical breach on the southern front, think tank says

Wake me up when it's a strategic breach.

I am kinda sick of video after video of major news when it's a few blocks of some village taken. Don't get me wrong, if they were to reach the Azov or even Tokmak I'd jizz in my pants and not take it and throw it to the ground. But still.
