Anywhere there's a Strip Joint
I was on the way home from work tonight, and passed a radar in the opposite direction. A block before the radar, there was some guy standing on the sidewalk with a sign that said traffic tickets, and he was motioning people to slow down. Can you imagine if an unmarked car came along! What would he be charged with?

Possibly obstructing police?

Actually, the answer is there is nothing they can do. The closest thing is "impeding a police officer's duty" but that applies to someone uncovering a nark and foiling a speed trap (or any other traffic violation enforcement) doesn't come close to the standard of seriousness required. I've done something similar and was then harassed by the cop who I was warning others about. I talked to my lawyer (who actually laughed at the cop's foolishness) then filed an official complaint that resulted in his sorry ass receiving a stiff reprimand and a permanent black mark on his service record. The moron eventually was fired years later for similar breaches of law and conduct.

Moral of story: cops have less power than they puff their chests out to project.

When you think about it, he actually should be commended by the police officer for his public service initiative.

obstructing justice only occurs during ongoing investigations... radar is just a cash grab... if u alert people by flashing your headlights they will try to get you on 'improper use of headlights'

there is nothing wrong with standing on the street with a sign alerting people to a devious radar trap... if everybody did it, maybe we wouldnt have this radar epidemic

i've heard of johnny law using some intimidation on people who expose speed traps, but that's about all they can do.

LMFAO, this has to be the stupidest comment.

I nominate it for tool of the week.

It is this type of thinking/comments that contributes to what our society has become. IMHO as always.

While I disagree with the comment being stupid, I do agree that The Doctor is a tool.

Speed traps are illegal in Ontario.. the are correctly referred to as speed limit enforcement zones...

A police officer can not and would not stop a person on the side of road from waving a sign.. but if you wanted to get sneeky about just put...

Call XCOPPERS or POINTS on the back of the sign...

On the subject of speed traps, I was Eastbound on Lakeshore Blvd.W one day last week. It was just before noon and I was travelling at 60 km ( the limit) so I could afford to be relaxed when, at about the Canadian Legion I saw a Police Officer standing behind a tripod with the usual black device on it and a number of patrol cars waithing to give chase. All well and good, however, about a kilometer farther east was another speed trap, to catch the fellows who decide that they are past the only enforcement and can speed with impunity. That seems sort of unsporting, especially for the fellows who are racing away having just got a ticket.

LDB, I'm a little confused.

And then you go on to open your mouth and prove the opposite. Was your reading comprhension impaired by the lack of a smilely face?

OK, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you took the post at face value. I still fail to see how this could be the stupidest comment...although I would take that to be quite an accomplishement given present company.

Although we cannot say for sure what the intent was or what was going through the mind of the individual with the sign lets see how this thinking contributes to what society has become.

Speed limits are established based on what Municipalities/provinces perceive to be a safe speed for cars to be travelling given their surroundings i.e. school zone, residential area or highway. Police officers establish their radar enfocement zones in regions where you have a higher occurance of drivers exceeding the posted speed limit. Now unless you are a complete cynic or a curmudgeon, you understand that, while there is a financial penalty to speeding, the main objective of radar enforcement is not the "cash grab" that gypsy points out but and attempt to affect a change in the behaviour of the drivers in that area. In future visits to that area, the fine, inconvenience and sometimes humiliation associated with getting caught in the speed trap will trigger your memory and recall the frustration you experienced when driving along that street at an earlier time. Unless you are a complete moron with total disregard for the law and everyone's safety and personal well-being you will slow your vehicle to the speed limit or at least get close enough to it to demonstrate you have an understanding of what the speed limit actually is. In most cases, the objective has been accomplished.

Now for argument's sake, you are a resident (a guy lacking AnaisNorth's breast, but with a sign nonetheless) in an area that is designated a school zone (40 km/h in most regions) however the cars travel along this stretch of road with exccessive speed, relative to the posted limit. The area is already regularly patrolled by a radar enforcement unit but as a concerned citizen you take it upon yourself to assist in the behavioral modification process by making a sign and standing at the begining of the enforcement zone. Your interest is not in screwing cops out of fines, but to reduce the speed in this area and at the same time save the drivers, who knowingly or not are exceeding the posted limit, the unpleasant experience of being pulled over and cited for speeding. Again only an idiot would blow past the man warning of a speed trap and therefore the speeds are reduced.

Although many drivers may mock this indiviual at first, they are thankful as they pass safely through the speed trap in a law abiding manner and will give consideration to the speed limit next time through the area.

It is this type of thinking/comments that contributes to what our society has become. IMHO as always.

Perhaps we should look in the mirror next time Booty. :)

Well my humour , or lack there of, has been blamed for many things, but when you imply it is contributing to what society has become these days, I draw the line.

There was a guy a guy who lives out by me who painted a piece of plywood like a cop car..lol...wtf..I think the speed limit is border line ridiculous..it is a cash grab because let's face it nobody is slowing down and may I suggest perhaps more are speeding up!!
Just an opinion from a very wise person.

johnyboy...

If there were no laws governing the speed at which one could travel, can you just imagine the chaos that would take place on our streets and highways..

I agree that we should adopt the european high system.. ZERO tolerance for drinking, life time suspension for recklessness and jail time for bodily injury. If we did that then open the speed limits up..
