Ram speed question

I have a desctop and a laptop, both running vista, bought about 4 years ago. They still seem OK for what I do, but I was looking into doubling the RAM from 2GB to 4GB, for a little better performance.

My question is, if the desctop is using DDR2-PC2-5300, can I replace it with DDR2-PC2-6400 or higher? I know it will not do any good from a performance point of view, but the higher speed RAMs seem at this point cheaper than the 5300.

Probably. To be sure, use the kingston memory configurator and find out what type of RAM your system is known to work with.

Hint: You don't actually need to purchase the Kingston RAM. Just find out the type and speed, and make sure the new RAM is compatible with the Kingston part number.

Also keep in mind that it's not optimal to mix and match RAM. You can do it but sometimes it will default to the less capable RAM. At least, that's what the manufacturers say...

Just do it

I doubled my laptop RAM from 2GB to 4GB over a year ago and there was a very noticeable increase in performance with Vista and Linux. Surprised you waited this long.
