According to the recent survey the cost of having Cell Phone Services is costliest in Canada tops 3rd, which is bit shameful and disgusting being a developed country in North America, whereas 3rd, world countries are offering much lower rates to its consumers. The solution to this problem can be immediately solved if our so-called Govt. Authorities lift their own intrest embargo on other server companies of the world who wish to come to canada establish their facilities and provide much cheaper cell phone services to canadian consumers in all provinces. The big three Rogers, Bell & Telus are totally roip-off's due to which we have to pay the inflated bills upto our nose.
Hope a campaign is launched soon by some like minded people to regularize the service rates of using cell phones over here in Canada, the authorities should stop supporting these giants from fleecing canadian consumers, sad state of affairs are going on, and there is no one to look into such white collar rip-off crimes which is going on since long now. A group of lawyers should file a petition in courts to examine how people over here are reipped off by Cell phone servers every day. If two new server companies announce their plans to serve canadian markets, same day these rip-off giants would announce their new packages with much lower monthly rates. One Wonders when will positive things start happening in Canada, just across the border prices of all comodities are much lesser than why in Canadian Markets everyone is a Rip-off how the present Govt. is keeping a blind eye on such matters, if this persists Liberals would soon take over the power in Canada to solve common man's day to day problems. Canada is a highly Double Taxed Country, and its citizens are getting poorer and poorer as each day passes, whereas the Govt. Officials have no worries of a common man.

What a surprise. Canadians getting overcharged.

Airline/airport fees.
Cars.
Gas.
Taxes.
Toll roads.

I just came back from holidays in the U.S. and based on my calculations we're paying about 75 cents to 1 dollar (U.S.) more per U.S. gallon than they are. That's about 20-25 cents per litre.

This problem is not limited to cell phone fees. It is endemic in our country.

We just keep bending over and not only taking it up the ass but asking for it harder and deeper.

Well this is going to change. US cellular service providers have been approved to move into Canada and when that happens, our rates are going to plummet. In the US, you can get 4 phones, shared plan, unlimited local and long distance, for $25.00 a month (inclusive of all fees and taxes).

Now don't expect rates like that here but they're going to be lower.

This is why I am not and recommend that people don't sign any long term contracts until the fall.........

Somehow I don't think "competition" from U.S. companies will do much. According to this study U.S. customers are gouged even more than we are.

In general, I find the cost of food, gasoline ( don't forget a US gallon is smaller than a Canadian gallon) and tuition fees more in the US, but clothes, consumer products, airfares, communication and cars cheaper there. What about you guys?

Gasoline is no where NEAR cheaper here than the US. But food in grocery stores IS more money than here. It is far cheaper to eat at a restaurant or pub than buy groceries. When I travelled in the US extensively at one point to conserve money, I started staying at places like the residence inn etc. I was in Atlanta and picked up cereal for breakfast, milk, lunch meats, bread, magarine, enough for about 3 days. it cost me 60 bucks. In the previous 3 days I had only eaten out and it had cost me 45 bucks (and I wasn't cheaping out, I went to TGI fridays and one meal was two huge chicken breasts, 2 baked potatos, salad veggies and a coke for $11.00 including all taxes and tips)

with that in mind..is any Canadian close to the US Border allowed to have a US cell provider contract? ..wonder if it is worth it!?
what do you mean "allowed"? You can go to the US and buy a pay as you go phone no problem. They've probably fixed the coverage but in border areas back in the day, it was possible to pickup cells from the US with a CDN phone. Only problem was you'd get a bill for long distance, roaming etc. They've probably fixed it by now.

As for getting a "plan". You would need to rent a PO box in the US and have mail forwarding so you could pay your bills.

if you want to go contract, you'd probably need a US address

or you can get a prepaid phone in the US and see if it works in Canada; i've heard that it does, though you may have to pay a lot in roaming fees

I like how Canada's biggest export is oil, which we sell to the u.s, who sells it right back to us as gasoline at a much higher rate... why can't it be subsidized like all the other countries whose major export is oil (Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, etc) where they pay like .10-.25 per L

(going off a chart I found)
Petroleum products …US$63.7 billion (21% of Canada to U.S. exports, up 6% from 2005)
Passenger cars … $36.6 billion (12.5%, up 1.5%)
Car parts & accessories … $15.6 billion (5.1%, down 2.5%)
Complete & assembled cars … $12.2 billion (4%, down 2.3%)

All of these products cost more in Canada, then in the U.S, even though it's from here. It sucks! Damn you NAFTA!!

I have friends who have U.S. phones, billed to a U.S. address. It's far cheaper for them. And they only spend about 2 weeks a year in the U.S.

Give me a break. If people think it is expensive then don't get a cell phone. It's pretty simple. The only thing that upset me was that damn fee that they have been charging for years. I forgot what it was called. Anyways, here is a website that might help you out for the best plans out there.

Everything in Canada is way more expensive than US. But 1 thing I know is cheaper and better than US - SP :). I was living for about 2 years in the US back in the dot com bubble time (Sillicon valley). I tried SPs there in SJ. They were more expensive and the quality were really bad. I am not sure if the price/quality is getting better now due to the economy down turn.

Btw, sillicon valley do not have lots of man made sillicons. You have to go down to LA or San Diego for those :)

System Access Fees is being charged on monthly basis, which should be stopped immediately, they are minting huge amounts annually from this so-called fees which was not approved by the Govt on permanent basis, how Fido and other smaller servers survive without charging System Access Fees from their customers? There should be a body to govern such mal-practices by giant cell phone server companies, its high time they are made accountable also.

Yeah the dreaded system access fee. Way back when the Brick phone was in fashion a system access fee WAS a government imposed charge but they dropped that years ago. The thing is, the cellphone providers kept it as a cash grab.

The time is acoming though. As soon as the US providers get up here Robbers oops I mean Rogers, Bell and the others are going to lose so many customers I bet you'll see some going belly up. I mean, there are people paying $50.00 a month for plans that will end up costing $20.00 once the competition gets here.....

Again, I stress, DO NOT SIGN ANY LONG TERM CONTRACTS. The big providers are trying like hell to get people signed up before the US providers get here and then nail you to the wall if you try and break it.

I didn't look at my bill when I put my post on this thread. Thanks for the clarification. The System Access Fee really sucks.
