THANK GOD FOR COMPUTER TECHIES!

So I'm sitting at work today fretting over what's wrong with my computer (while it's at the shop) and I start googling stuff and find out my OEM Windows XP which I just installed will be totally worthless if I have to replace my motherboard as the motherboard is what constitutes a "system" and an OEM Windows can only be installed on one system. Talk about pissing my money away! Then I go to Microsoft and check the tested devices page and the WD320 drives are tested to work on Win XP Pro but not Win XP Home. *Sigh*

Now for the good news...

I call the techy in the afternoon and he tells me he's got it up and running and hasn't had it crash in well over an hour. The problem? A fucking IED cable!!! That little piece of shit has caused me over 20 hours of non-stop grief for the past week. Apparently, when you boot up and go into BIOS, if the drive detects as a bunch of jumbled letters it's a good sign that the IED cable is faulty. I saw those letters but just assumed they meant the drive wasn't detected.

So for less than $50, I got my system totally up and running (with Win XP Home on the new WD320 and the old Hitachi fully detected as a slave) and replaced the faulty IED cable.

THANK GOD FOR COMPUTER TECHIES!

And a big shout out to all those on TERB who helped me out in my (most recent) moment of crisis. Especially Joebear! :)

I was going to suggest buying a new cable or using a different cable but I thought that can't be the problem.

It's hard to diagnose a hardware problem over the net or phone without getting all the error codes.

I'm glad you got it all sorted out. It is a frustrating experience whenever there is a harware problem that is hard to pinpoint.

Test the hitachi drive again and see if the same error code pops up otherwise any previous errors may have been caused by the faulty ide cable. There may have been no need to buy XP Home or the new WD drive.

The Hitachi drive was overheating in the past so I didn`t trust it; thus the new hard drive. I scanned the Hitachi and it came back with sector errors so I know it needs to be wiped and reformated. Now I can copy over the data files I need and wipe the drive. Afterwards I`ll scan it again and if it still has errors I`ll chuck it.

Funny thing is that I tried a different IED cable at one point but, looking back, I probably didn`t have the right jumpers in place at the time so having a cable that worked didn`t matter. The cable that failed was a new one too whereas the other cable was old so I figured the new cable can`t be bad. Yeah, right! :p

I only have a pirated Win XP Pro so I wouldn`t be able to reinstall it in light of the recent Windows update changes on the Microsoft site. Which leads me to my next question in a new thread...
