Do any of use those external harddrives where you can store media files (movies, music, images) and use it as a player to watch movies on tv also? I belive they're called media players. Which one do you have and recommend? I'm looking to get one that can play a variety of video formats

I get around.
There are 2 seperate components:
One is the media player such as Asus O!Play and Western Digital TV Live, which can play (output) all the various media files to your monitor (HDTV or whatever). I've had an Asus O!Play for a few years and it's pretty good.
Then you also need storage. The media player can be used with a wireless network if you have that at home so you can play files from your PC. Or you can get an external HDD in a case, and store the media files on that, and connect that to the media player either directly or through your PC.

Hope that helps. And don't go to Future Shop or Best Buy - try www.ncix.com, great prices and they can help you figure out what will best suit you.

ah thanks... no wonder I can't see to find what exactly its called. Are there any units sold that come with both the media player and storage devices in one? or do i have to buy them separately? would love to be able to take one box to a relatives or friends place rather than carry multiple units. I could just connect my computer to the tv but wanted the ease of an all-in-on storage/player box

Get one that had two drives and can do RAID1 or mirroring if you plan on using it for things that are important to you like photos or family videos.

If you are just spooling downloaded porn and Hollywood movies this doesn't matter.

With mirroring you don't lose your data unless both drives fail, but you get half the space. It makes a copy of everything to the second drive.

I wouldn't shop at Canada Computers if my life depended on it. There are hundreds of stores which can sell what you need. Just don't go to the one that doesn't deserve your business.

Care to elaborate on this highly opinionated comment?

Of course you have every right to your personal opinion, but it's only value as advice is if someone here on TERB was interested in saving your life.

Something a tad more informative and factual would be more helpful.

MattRoxx describes it perfectly. All you need to know.

In addition, you also have the option to buy a network drive. Its just like an external drive, but hooks to your wireless router. So when that is done anyone in house can read it. Any and all computers, media players etc. You'll need a fast router though.

I buy my stuff from Tigerdirect.

I just upgraded to a Patriot Box Office and have a leftover Mediagate MG-35. I think the HD is 500G. It is a good beginner all in one unit and if you find you are using it often, you can decide about spending the bigger coin for a nicer interface.

I think $40 including the HD would be a fair price. Be aware it does not have HDMI out.
