What do I need to do this?

Is it true that the chip required also acts as a graphics card since I have a very basic graphics card. Just thinking it would be nice to upgrade the graphics card at the same time if this is the case.

What kind of software is needed? Will the program remove comercials? Can I get it for free on the internet?

Also, I have a dvd burners, dvd decrypter, dvd shrink, and roxio DVD creator... is this enough to make my own dvds from vhs or tv?

Anyways, any advice would be appreciated.

I think that the All-In-Wonder video card from ATI will do this and would work as a video card. As for software, if the card doesn't come with something, InterVideo makes WinDVD Recorder (which came with my computer) that is supposed to record TV.

Hopefully someone who knows more about this can verify.

You would need a tv tuner and capture card which ATI All in Wonder series has it. As for software, you would need to edit the commericals yourself.

You need a fast machine first of all if you want to record at high resolutions. I have the ATI Pro TV tuner card...you can record tv but at lower resolutions though. I have a P4 2.4ghz and even thats not good enough to record at higher resolutions.

The easiest...

way to do this, is to consider using the ATI TV Wonder USB 2.0. It is only about $100. Make sure your pc meets the minimum requirements and you should have no problems. I use one on my Dell X300 notebook which has a Centrino 1.5Ghz mobile pentium chip, with no problems what so ever.

Take a look at the ATI TV Wonder usb 2.0 here:
http://www.ati.com/products/tvwonderusb20/index.html

Very easy to install and works flawlessly.

The previous posters are right..you need a capture card...does not need to be a "tv Tuner" unless you want to record something else while watching another program.

My thinking is...you want to just record the video and do some basic editing...

Go with ATI..stable cards...and they have "basic" versions of editing programs included.

You won't be Spielberg with the editing but it will do what you want.

Just remember video takes up HUGE amounts of disc space. And, so does the editing process. When you work in non linear..meaning hard disk...it needs to cache quite a bit of info..

The more HD space you have the better..if you have 2 drives..even better

There are lots of sources on google...do a search save some time and money
