It seems to me a simple explanation is still religion takes away the pain of Capitalism while keeping us dumb....except that it isn't the correct quote nor is it the right interpretation.
In the complete quote Karl Marx calls religion “point d’honneur”, a spiritual response to the unjust world where “the struggle against religion is, therefore, indirectly the struggle against that world whose spiritual aroma is religion”. He doesn’t ridicule religion as the opium quote implies but sees his own ideas as the extension of the same struggle. Not only that but Karl Marx betrays the hyper religious, post judeo-christian context of this own theory when he writes that nothing short of the “world to come” can erase the superstition: “To call on them to give up their illusions about their condition is to call on them to give up a condition that requires illusions”. That was in a way Marx’s own opium in one sentence since the “human essence has not acquired any true reality”. Yet instead of the crude opium reference there is that beautifully poetic conclusion “of that vale of tears of which religion is the halo”

Agree with this but it sure takes away from the importance of religion in the comment. You could even add the iinternet. It seems to me a simple explanation is still religion takes away the pain of Capitalism while keeping us dumb
Insert sports, TV, game boys, porno, etc for religion
