Remembering 9/11

As 9/11 approaches, I'm curious to know if anyone remembers where they were when the news broke, and do Canadians still acknowledge that time in history with anything in particular?

I was in Grade 9 Geography class when the news came over the speaker system. Classes were cancelled and TVs were set up for us to watch live coverage. On the city bus on the way home everybody had the newspaper and it was all anyone could talk about for the next couple months. I realize it's been 25 years but I still acknowledge 9/11 with a 2 minutes of silence. I had a classmate who lost an Aunt in one of the towers and in honor of the lives lost, I still acknowledge this particular day.

Condolences to your classmate’s family. My own aunt was actually visiting New York and even went up the Twin Towers just days before the attacks.

I myself was in kindergarten and too young to recall that day. It wasn’t until years later, by googling it, that I learned what 9/11 was.

The most depressing Friday of 2026.

The House of Saud is dependent on the most militant wing of Islam (Wahhabism) to retain power. They had a full month to stop the attack from happening, they looked away.

I was in the locker room of my country club in Montreal getting ready for a round of golf with my buddy.

The tv in the locker room showed the first plane hitting the WTC tower. We thought it was just a wildly freak and tragic accident, and kept changing for our game.

Then the second plane hit. There was no golf that day.

A couple of weeks later I went to New York. I visited ground zero, with the plywood cladding up, and all sorts of tributes that people had brought there.

One of the smaller and older buildings across the street from the site still had smoke coming out of its windows...

Little did we know the scope of situation until after the round.

I worked in NYC then. Changed my world and direction of my work. I still get pangs of emotion thinking about that day and those we lost and in particular of those missing people signs posted on lamposts etc like they were missing pets. It smelled like dead bodies down at ground zero for a few months afterward.

A beautiful Weds morning. I still to this day work late on Weds so I was home that morning enjoying my coffee and time with my newborn son. Turned on the news to hear of a fire at WTC due to an accident involving a plane. I immediately thought of my classmate who worked in one of the towers. Then the second plane struck and the news was reporting multiple hijackings and I knew it was a coordinated attack.

I am often nostalgic for the innocence of our lives before that day.

My classmate‘s body was never found.

I was in Grade 11 and heard about it during lunch or just before lunch from friends. Didn't think much of it until I got home and almost every tv station was talking about it. Some of my friends had better teachers who brought a tv into the room and watched stuff during the class. Didn't hit me as hard until seeing folks jumping from the building to death.

I was in elementary school when it happened. I remember the teacher wheeled in the tv screen and we all thought it was movie day. Instead she said class was cancelled and showed us why on the screen. We watched the news that day in absolute horror! I remember going home after school crying to my mom absolutely terrified that the CN tower was next.

Yes, I hadn't forgotten about this other tragedy, I was just bringing up 9/11 as we were near the 25th anniversary for it.

An event that changed the world forever. I still remember like it was yesterday. Could not believe what I was seeing that day. I was in those Twin Towers back in the early 90's they were gigantic. Then when I visited NYC in March 2002 they were just empty spaces. Utterly surreal.

I wish I had the chance to see them in person. I remember seeing them in TV series like Friends and thinking they looked so cool. When 9/11 happened the producers of Friends took the twin towers out of all episodes moving forward. Anytime I see a show or a movie with them in it I wish I had gone before that fateful day.
