If you reset your iPhone to factory settings, do you lose all the info you saved on your apps or is that info backed up on iTunes on your computer?

Been there; done it!
I reset my phone to the factory settings and lost all my downloaded apps, and music. When I re-synced with my main computer...it all went back on the phone. So...the apps/music etc. are on the itunes file on your computer.
The future problem is if your main computer gets fried and you lose your itunes file...then, as mamasanlover says...you need a plan B, an external backup!

Okay but I'm not talking about the apps themselves, I'm talking about the info you save on the apps. For example, if you have an app that creates lists, will you retain the lists you already created once you re-sync after resetting?

I have a list program; 2DoLite. When I did the re-sync with my main computer, after the factory re-boot...the list was still there...and no one had done any of my tasks in the interim :(

I would be very careful with this. A lot of apps sync to something in google. itunes will sync some also. personally, i have tried some apps that, on installing an update, lose their own previous data! the iphone world is very messy. If you restore, you get the latest apple release. unless you're jailbroke and have saved shsh on cydia (or locally).

I guess the question is, if you restore and lose everything, how bad is that?

hmmm. alright. i understood apple was no longer signing 3.n.n versions. it really shouldn't be this hard. apple has taken a great device and dumbed it down so much that it's barely useful to anyone but a corporate user. i was going to test the restore (i quickly synced my installous directory) but now it says i'll lose songs not backed up in my itunes library. i don't use itunes. it's another shambles. i'll wait till i have time to rebuild and then i'll simply upgrade to a version 4 ios that's jailbroken.

So I did a factory reset/restore today and lo and behold I lost my saved app data. When you restore to factory settings it gives you the option of reverting to your last backup or going to original factory settings. I needed to go back to factory since I had jailbroken my phone and my last backup was when it was jailbroken.

I was hoping the app data would be saved on iTunes and would be restored after I synced my data but no such luck. After the reset I could still sync my phone with iTunes but I lost all my app data. Luckily I had prepared for that and forwarded the important info on.

BE AWARE!!!

I think what you guys need is this:

Cucusoft iPhone iTouch iPod to Computer
Cucusoft iPhone/iTouch/iPod to Computer Transfer is an easy to use iPod/iPhone utility designed to help you backup all your files from your iPod/iPhone/iTouch. Recover lost or missing music or backup and restore all of your iPod/iPhone/iTouch content; including your favorite songs, videos, photos, Play Lists and more. If you have any iPod/iPhone device, this software is a 'must have' utility to keep your iPod/iPhone safe.

I use it to save all my iphone files. I would recommend.

I was updating one of the many to-do apps. Called Awesome Notes. I copied all my files off the itouch to my pc. updated. MY GOD!! The update threw away all my notes! I copied my backed up files over to the itouch. no good. tried to re-sync with Google. Didn't work. I might have made a boo-boo myself tho. can't be sure. Eventually, I gave up and used something else.

Moral: be careful. be willing to lose everything on upgrades. I think you can minimize the risk by using apps that either sync with a cloud entity or that simply let you copy the files. It's not simple.

The issue isn't backing up, that's easy to do. The issue is resetting to factory settings. If you need to do that then reverting to a previous backup doesn't accomplish anything because you'll just be back in the same situation you were in before.

I've never had a issue with Simplenote after update after update after update.
