He had to be euthanized this morning at the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary School's New Bolton Center.Choron said:he's dead? or retired from racing?
Perhaps so, but less an euphemism than “put down.” It wasn’t an easy decision for anyone involved, but to my mind better and kinder than permitting him to die in agonyguyroch said:http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/horse/news/story?id=2747087
Euthanized ... Lets use a big word to hide the fact you killed the animal ..
When the horse can no longer lie down or stand up, it has to be put away.guyroch said:http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/horse/news/story?id=2747087

Yes indeed Barbaro is a horse, a beautiful valiant champion horse who fought a good fight with his unyielding will to live. He will be sorely missed for what he exemplifies.stever said:Yes it is a horse... but so what. I'd take his spirit and beauty over most of the human athletes I see on a daily basis. With his injury, the most humane thing to do was to put him down. Isnt that what most people in agony want? In fact, watching the maple leaf defence, i wish they could do the same for them on some nights.
If indeed Barbaro was forced into slavery, those responsible should really be ashamed, shouldn't they??? But this issue is not at the center stage here. The good doc is not speaking from the point of view of an animal lover. The point is, if you transcend the physical bodies of a horse and a human and see how a creature (horse or human) live a life with the heart of a champion and who exemplifies excellence, those are the characters that make the creature praiseworthy, horse or human. Is that clear to you now???incognito said:Ummm...its a horse that is forced into slavery. Like the dolphines and whales at sea world. He might have been better off dead. Funny how we have more emotion to when an animal dies than when a human dies.
Maybe if they whipped him more he could have even gone faster and faster and faster until . . . . well. . . . his heart exploded or something. That's be worth some money I bet. Horse racing along with greyhound racing is a stupid and idiotic practice. Simply things for morons to lose money betting on. There is nothing "valiant" about it. Visit the stables at Woodbine or visit a training centre when the colts are first introduced to their training. Yes, most trainers use a cattle prod and there is nothing beautiful about that either. They wanted to keep Barbaro alive for one reason: stud fees. All their philathropic protests are bullshit. Crocodile tears extraordinaire. Pal, what you said may be very true but it is not my point at all. If you read what I already said, Barbaro is worthy of praise for his unyielding will to live inspite of his gruesome injuries he suffered and later on laminitis, a painful and often fatal disease. In a broader scale, my praise applies to all creatures, be they horses, humans, dogs, cats, and what not, who display the persistent will to live, the heart of a champion, inspite of the tremendous odds against them. True, there are lots of hypocrites in this world. But it certainly does not apply to this horse called Barbaro. Hypocrites get no praise from the good doc. End of the story.dj1470 said:Maybe if they whipped him more he could have even gone faster and faster and faster until . . . . well. . . . his heart exploded or something.
