Women loved him. Good actor

Actor, director and producer Robert Redford, who was both the quintessential handsome Hollywood leading man and an influential supporter of independent films through his Sundance Institute, had died at the age of 89.

His publicist Cindi Berger confirmed the death to CBC News on Tuesday, saying he passed away in his home in Sundance in the mountains of Utah, "the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved."

Redford made hearts beat faster in romantic roles such as Out of Africa, got political in The Candidate and All the President's Men and skewered his golden-boy image in roles like the alcoholic ex-rodeo champ in The Electric Horseman and middle-aged millionaire who offers to buy sex in Indecent Proposal.

He used the millions he made to launch the Sundance Institute and Festival in the 1970s, promoting independent filmmaking long before small and quirky were fashionable.

He never won the best actor Oscar, but his first outing as a director — the 1980 family drama Ordinary People — won Oscars for best picture and best director.

Redford remained best known for the two early movies he made with Paul Newman — the 1969 western caper Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and The Sting (1973), both of which became classics.

A lot of Boomer women are sad today. When I was a kid it seemed every adult female loved him

My favorite memory concerning Robert Redford was when I was living in Montreal.

"The Way We Were", with Robert and Barbara Streisand, had just recently been released.

I took an Israeli girl to the theatre to see it.

The large audience was laughing at a scene, but went quiet as the scene ended, and a close--up of Robert's face filled the screen.

Just then, the girl I was with, not realizing the sudden quiet, said to me in a somewhat loud voice "Oy, a face you could eat up! "

The whole audience laughed again...

RIP Robert

He was a good actor, not great. He was a keen judge of talent, those that passed muster ended up in his films. George Clooney is conducting his career the same way.

He wasn't at Paul Newman's level, he didn't try to be.

One of Hollywoods best ever!
Actor, Activist, Producer, Founder of
Of Sundance Film Festival which helps get many indie films backed and distributed.
His list of great and timeless films besides
All The Presidents Men, The Way We Were,
3 Days Of The Condor, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Natural, All Is Lost,
one of his most underrated performances
and films due to its untimely release
I have to believe:

Spy Game.
