In the Heat of the Night is on my all time favourite list. Poitier and Steiger what a combo.
Directed by local lad Norman Jewison, who's still alive, he's 95.
Correct me if I'm wrong, the last film he directed was Hurricane, with Denzel Washington playing the wrongfully convicted boxer Rubin Carter.
Another Sidney Portier classic worth watching is A Patch of Blue, Shelley Winters plays a MAGA type. His co-star Elisabeth Hartman should have become a superstar, bi-polar disorder killed her at 43. In a way Jane Fonda got the roles EH would have gotten had she been healthy. She was 21 when she made the film...gorgeous redhead.

He actually chose his roles carefully, he did not want to play the stereotypical black.
He was groundbreaking on how Black people were portrayed on screen.
First saw him in the original theatre release of "Lilies Of The Field" in 1963. I was blown away by the power of his performance.
The rest of his films were very high quality as well.
