Can we have a thread about his death, his life, what he gave the world? Instead of turning this into a debate about the existence of God?

RIP to a man who contributed a lot to the world we live in.
This... ^^^

Thank you.

Stephen was a brilliant man, no doubt, whose body suffered slowly while his mind tried to maintain his genius over his mental illness. In the scientific community he will be sadly missed but the impact of his life and his many contributions will live on for generations to come.

To Stephen Hawkings ... an inspiration to many. I will raise a glass of fine whiskey to your life and toast to what's beyond.

VBB
And this... ^^^

Might as well shut this thread down now.

Non believers arguing with the religious about the existence of a god, is not going any place, nothing will be resolved between the two sides, a complete waste of bandwidth.

And as Jessica posted, unfortunate that religion had to be brought up.

RIP
And this... ^^^

Larry King once asked Stephen Hawking, the smartest guy in the world, what he didn't understand. He said, "Women."

And a wicked sense of humour. RIP

I was a student at U of T at the time and attended his guest lecture at the Convocation Hall on April 27, 1998. I was very lucky to get a seat. It was like seeing the Pope and he reached "rockstar" status on campus for the event.

Here we go again the control police getting all butt hurt again because someone mentioned God..

This topic is part of Stephen Hawkins identity and he has made countless comments on this topic himself. He believed fundamentally that the universe and life have meaning even though he doesnÂ’t believe in the traditional sense of god. He has contributed great insight into this topic and should be highlighted as well as his other achievements. He tried very hard to find the theory of everything that would give a glimpse to the mind of god in the figurative sense.

If you are going to talk about him and prevent others from expressing their opinions then provide substance to you words. Provide examples how Stephen Hawking has changed your life, what has he done to you that affected your life and the understanding of he universe and why does he mean so much to you and why is he so inspirational otherwise STFU and stop trying to control people and their opinions and feelings that mean something to them.

When they find the “theory of everything” they will answer this question whether god exist or not and in what form. This is the major tie to this discussion thus why it’s being brought up.

He believed in an ‘impersonal God,’ but not a creator

Hawking invoked the name of God in his seminal book A Brief History of Time, writing that if physicists could find a “theory of everything” — that is, a cohesive explanation for how the universe works — they would glimpse “the mind of God.”

But in later interviews and writings, such as 2010Â’s The Grand Design, which he co-wrote with Leonard Mlodinow, Hawking clarified that he wasnÂ’t referring to a creator in the traditional sense.

“Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist,” he wrote in The Grand Design. “It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going.”

Using language about God, Hawking told TIME after the bookÂ’s release, is more figurative than literal.

“God is the name people give to the reason we are here,” he said. “But I think that reason is the laws of physics rather than someone with whom one can have a personal relationship. An impersonal God.”

“Before we understand science, it is natural to believe that God created the universe. But now science offers a more convincing explanation,” he said. “What I meant by ‘we would know the mind of God’ is, we would know everything that God would know, if there were a God, which there isn’t. I’m an atheist.”

Though Hawking rejected the conventional notion of God or a creator, he fundamentally believed that the universe and life have meaning, according to the New York Times.

“Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see and wonder about what makes the universe exist,” Hawking said of the meaning of life. “Be curious. And however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at.”

Nobody is "butt hurt" because religion was brought up,... if it relates to Stephen.

But simply about the futility of the two sides of opinion arguing about the existence of a god,... waste of bandwidth.

Hawking was joking when he said he didn't understand women, he certainly had enough of them in his life.

Advancement in ALS research must have come a long way, Hawking go to 76 years. A total athlete like Lou Gehrig barely made three years after he was diagnosed.

No that is still a typical lifespan after diagnosis. Dr. Hawking was extraordinary in more ways than one.

For those who believe in God.
Ironically his first wife Jane publicly stated that it was her active Christianity, that gave her hope during her marriage and in overcoming the depression she experienced while her husband physically declined and she became his caregiver.

Interstellar was the end of the Christopher and Jonathan Nolan's partnership, they bit off more than they could chew.

I question the depression part Aardie, Jane wanted to be needed. She was at her best as his primary caregiver. Once nurses, doctors and engineers took over his management is when their marriage started to fall apart.
