I didn't see a thread this year. I guess rock n roll fans have completely given up on it? I thought once Jann Wenner was removed from the selection committee things would improve. I thought wrong.

I read an article a while ago that claimed some older members on the committee had a prejudice against Canadian artists. According to the article, this stemmed from a law Canada passed in the early 70's that only allowed Canadian stations to play a certain number of American artists per hour. There was a large radio station in Detroit that had their transmitter in Canada and they were also subjected to this rule. The Detroit station fought back, but to no avail. Do any of you older fans remember anything like this?

Still The Guess Who should be in and I don't think they have ever been nominated. Joan Baez is in, but not Gordon Lightfoot. Dolly Parton is in, but not Joe Cocker. I wish I knew the reasoning.

I think it will be a slow process over a given time, nice to see Ozzy (solo) and Foreigner join the ranks. I still don't understand some of the choices but hey...what do I know.

Mary J Blige > Ronnie James Dio ?
A Tribe Called Quest > Iron Maiden ?
Dave Mathews Band > Motorhead ?
Cher > Bryan Adams ?
Kool & The Gang > Tool ?

....and list goes on.

I knew about the early 70s CanCon, 30 % Cdn, believe CFNY got a reduction in the 1980s because they could not find enough Cdn artists, correct me if I am wrong( I was very young in the early 70s but I guess it explains the outsized exposure to Canadian tunes on the living room radio/stereo while wrestling on the rug) but did not know a Detroit station was subject to it because of their Canadian transmitter.

I'm loving this version because I'm such a huge fan of Kool & the Gang (they are most worthy), A Tribe Called Quest and Mary J. Blige. I get they aren't "Rock n Roll" artists but given that they have opened it up to other genres over the years and these are powerhouse artists. That being said I definitely don't understand the Cher and Dave Matthews Band inclusions before some more worthy artists including some of those you mentioned.

Weird Al Yankovic isn't in the Rock HOF?! Who's going to induct Derek Gilstrap without him.

Derek has the most gorgeous women in his videos, he doesn't objectify them. He no Snotly Crue.

Even gays participate in Derek's climate change adventures (4.38).

The Guess Who were way bigger in Canada than anywhere else.

I agree with Gord and Joe.

Tommy James and the Shondells should be in The Hall of Fame. It’s not just that they had a lot of hits, it’s how iconic most of those hits are. Some of them have even been hits as cover versions. Hanky Panky, Mony Mony, I Think We’re Alone Now, Crimson and Clover, Crystal Blue Persuasion, Sweet Cherry Wine, and a few more that charted.

From the Rock HOF website:

"Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record. Criteria include the influence and significance of the artists’ contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll. "

Beach Boys, Pete Townshend, Jimi Hendrix. Eddie Van Halen, as well as jazz fusion artists - all cited Dick Dale as an influence. That's a pretty big significance. Boss Nass you are so right!

Shack - Wow you are right about the Guess Who. I thought they were huge around the world. I checked top 40 hits for them (not the only criteria but a gauge on popularity) - UK - 2, US - 13, Can - 33. I still think they should be in, but maybe they aren't seen as being influential. Still the HOF says they want more diversity, and I think having more artists outside the US and UK would help that. I think Canada only has 5 - Neil, Joni, Leonard, Rush, The Band.

The problem with the HOF is that the voting is not transparent. In the past Jann Wenner and his cronies put more weight to their personal favorites over the nominating committee's choices. They have rejected artists because they wouldn't sell tickets to their show or now give them a bigger TV viewing audience.

And lastly just for you drlove - a quote from Bruce Dickinson about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame : "an utter and complete load of bollocks ... run by a bunch of sanctimonious bloody Americans who wouldn't know rock 'n' roll if it hit them in the face" .

The Rock HOF is a total joke. Madonna is in but Gordon Lightfoot isn't.

As such I'm pushing for Anal Birth to be inducted.

I agree. They may not have created a genre, per se, but they certainly made significant contributions.

Respectfully. Why should either Madonna or Gordon Lightfoot be in? neither of them are rock and roll. Why the fuck is Joan Baez in the rock and roll hall of fame? Name one rock song she did.
