No longer will the Blue Jays be the only team in major league baseball to play on AstroTurf," Godfrey said.

Instead a new FieldTurf surface will be installed

Whats is FieldTurf?
From what i know, field turf is a more soft and grass like surface than the hard, carpet like astro turf. The Arrrrrgoooooos have field turf and it looks and feels alot like real grass but is artificial. On the name change I HATE IT!!! I mean wtf does a centre have to do with a ball field? Why not Rogers Field or Rogers Stadium? are they assuming the Jays wont be playing there much longer? I just dont get the name. I know more goes on there than BJ games but come on "Centre"?

agreed I HATE it!! it's like someone asked them what they were calling it, and they blurted out the first thing that came to mind. But no alas it's not about sports but more about marketing and the big buck!

Ultimately they can call SKyDome anything they want - they own it after all. But the end result is still the same - the Jays suck. They need to concentrate on that first & foremost. A close second is the actual stadium. The food sucks, the amenities suck, the seating sucks.

Other than that it's a great Stadium!

What a joke of a name. Several reasons for that. First off, could not they have just added a corporate name to SkyDome? For example, Rogers' SkyDome. That sounds better. One thing I hate is corporations naming stadia, and only after short periods, it gets name to something totally different. I remember 2 or so years ago the stadium where the Redskins play out of was renamed in one calender year 3 times!! WTF!!! I don't mind adding the corporate name ot the stadium name. People still identify with it. But when they rename them every few years the building builds no identity or association with the people.
Second, this renaming doesn't add any new revenue streams. This is like robbing Peter to pay Paul. What they should have done was get some other corporation to pay for the name thereby getting new money into the pot, relieving some pressure from father Roger. This won't improve the Jays at all IMHO.

Skydome was such an obvious name similar to 1985 Vancouver LRT public
name competition winner Skytrain. But skydome seemed catchy as american
announcers phoneticized "towrontow skydome".

Skydome may stick. Renaming CN tower failed. Blue Jays renaming to Jays
didn't stick. Argonauts renaming to Argos didn't stick. It's still the Eaton's
Center. As Skydome has only had one name public critical mass may win out
when smooth talking branding sharks chat up 'ol Teddy over this eponymous
megalomania.

Reminds me of KFC renaming to Scott's Chicken Villa, what a mistake.

xarir - you forgot the sound system sux!

You would think they wouldve been a little more imaginative, seems nowadays everything seems to called "This or that CENTRE"
Im waiting for some SC owner to rename his club "So and So's Strip Centre"

I hate it - I'll continue calling it The Skydome just for spite. Does this guy have to have his name on everything?? When you factor in the needeless costs associated with the changeover, it's idiotic.

When i first made my comment i didnt think about the Air Canada Centre. That really doesnt sound so bad but for some reason Rogers Centre is just horrible! I think its because its a ball park. You need a great name for a field. Just sounds too unusual. At least the Rogers dude is throwing some money at the place and the team now too. My other comments about the team moving were premature too. The guys investing in this team big time now. new score screens, new field and something like 200 million in payroll over the next 3 or 4 years. Not yankees numbers but not bad either. At least he's trying. Name still sucks though. So does the Jays name too for that matter

Rogers Field would be ideal if the facility is strictly use for sporting events-which we all know is not the case. Rogers Centre is more apt given that Skydome is a multi-purpose venue.

They're looking at changing the whole image of the Skydome-Keeping "Dome" in any new name will not do that.

IMHO, I really don't care what they call it-as long as the team on the field is much improved with the infusion of $.
