Wow, that driver should have been fired on the spot.

I did a google search, and came across an interesting article from the Toronto Star, a few years back.

Transfer dispute leads to a busload of trouble

Joseph Hall

When Stasia Bowen hopped aboard a TTC bus with her two kids on Rathburn Rd. in Etobicoke last spring, she rode right on to the system’s annual top 10 list of passenger complaints.

“I got on with my two children, I paid the three fares and then about two stops later, I realized I hadn’t taken any transfers,” recalls Bowen, a secretary at a Toronto legal firm.

“So I went back to the driver and asked for the transfers and he refused to give them to me. He said I had to get them at point of payment and he really made a big stink about it. Then everything went nuts.”

Over the next half hour or so, Bowen says the simple transfer dispute turned into a war of wills, with the bus driver ordering all the other passengers on to another vehicle and calling both his supervisor and police to settle the issue.

“When the police got there, they took the three transfers, handed them to me and I was on my way,” Bowen says.

“I wrote them (the TTC) a letter about the whole thing.”

Bowen was one of more than 370 TTC passengers who launched official complaints against the system last year over transfer disputes.

And she’s one of dozens of readers who phoned or e-mailed this Corner after last week’s column, which reported the top 10 list of passenger complaints kept by the TTC.

Bowen’s transfer dispute category only rated seventh.

Most of the disgruntled riders contacting The Star last week were passing on stories of rude TTC drivers and collectors, who earned the No. 1 position on the list.

The TTC received more than 2,400 complaints about rude staff last year.

Among those sent to the Corner was this one from Howie Cheung:

“It’s not surprising that rude, discourteous drivers rank right up there. It is for that reason that, since I was a teen and reliant on the TTC to get to school or anywhere I wanted to go, I have been turned off of public transit.

“It’s been over 20 years and I have rarely used the TTC more than once or twice a year. If the transit commission doesn’t get their collective act together then they will see more and more people shy away from public transit.”

There was also this from Willem Simonis:

“Let me add my support to your story about the complaints against TTC staff. I’m a professional, white male, 44, who takes the TTC every day. I find that generally, ticket takers at (subway) booths are boorish old men who get offended when they’re asked to get off their seats or when a customer asks them to repeat anything.

“There have been a few instances where I’ve been shocked by the racism exhibited by TTC staff, to the point where I’ve actually reprimanded the TTC staff when the incident happened in front of me.

“Personally, I buy the monthly TTC pass to avoid any interaction with TTC employees or to avoid seeing their transgressions against other customers. I don’t need to start off my day with their rudeness and surliness. Even when there are no customers in line, I will still use my pass through the automated turnstile.”

Other readers, however, saw two sides to the stories of rudeness, including this from Toronto’s Chris Cole:

“I thought it would be interesting to see a poll done with the drivers of these buses. How many racial slurs must they endure, how many riders are there who try to get away without paying the fare? And these drivers are all the while trying to keep to a very tight schedule despite traffic and weather.

“I would also like to hear the stories of drivers who have been helpful because they were at the right place at the right time. They have been great witnesses for accidents, helped with car fires and even offered to pick up passengers who needed assistance and then not charged them the fare.”

Finally, there’s this from Michelle Cliffe.

“I travel to work via three TTC stations each morning. Every one of those stations has the doors open, and the insides of the stations are freezing. I cannot find any reason for these doors to be open, letting valuable energy out. The massive hydro bills are, I’m sure, charged back to the customer in the end. Not to mention the environmental concerns. Are we that lazy that we cannot stick our hands out to open doors?”

It's a service industry and there are rude people in every branch that I have had experience with. Bad waiters, impatient doctors and nurses, car dealer service departments, store clerks, you get the picture. The number one complaint I hear about is attitude from SP's who are charging for a hour what any of the others make in a day. It's a reality of interacting with people. Shrug it off as the person being an asshole but don't let it spoil your day. They'll win then and you'll be as miserable as them.

Between a rock and a hard place
The first line in the advertisement for TTC drivers includes the phrase "city of Toronto ambassador". Drivers are well aware of their role beyond the simple operation of their vehicle. They are also fare fraud investigators, safety monitors, emergency sanitation workers (within their vehicle), and security guards.

I have encountered rude drivers who will not answer questions in unfamiliar territory throughout the city and I totally understand why. I am a toronto resident and native and there are hundreds of routes I have not travelled, so often I am the one asking these questions. Sometimes, before boarding, I will ask the driver about his route or a destination along his route. Plenty of drivers simply do not provide directions as a matter of personal preference because very often they find they are wasting their breath on dumbasses who cannot hear them or understand them because they have attention deficit problems. Drivers often try to be polite and then find themselves lured into a lengthy pointless drivel fest that wastes their time.

I don't blame them, for avoiding conversation, but there is no call for rudeness. A simple, "I am only familiar with my route which is blankety avenue - blankbound, and my final destination which is blankety station." If this does not satisfy a passenger's requirements then he does not know what the hell he wants and cannot be helped with any amount of tactful attention.

But when a driver is too obstinate to deign himself to do the very least he can and should, such as answer yes or no to a particular question about a destination on his route, then this is where I put my foot down. Literally and figurateively. I usually resort to the tactic of one foot on the ground and one foot in the door of the vehicle. The bus cannot proceed and no amount of anger will change that. Then I patiently ask my question and hold my ground until a proper, full answer is provided. The quarrel only grows as big as the driver chooses to make it.

*** Important Note ***

I try not to behave this way on routes I travel often because 1. It is unnecessary as I am already familiar with the route and 2. if the driver recognizes me he will bypass my stop on subsequent trips if I am standing alone.

Anyway, back on topic. TTC drivers have to put up with a lot of crud day in and day out, and it does wear them done.
C'mon man, don't give us this bullsh*t. We all work hard, I don't see janitors or construction workers being rude, and believe me, they have it tougher than those lard azzes sitting in an air-conditioned bus cruising around the city. If they can't take the heat then leave them go find another $24.80 an hour job at some burger joint.

I hear now that they want to get an automated street calling machine instead
of doing it themselves
Talk about LAZY!!
I thought they were driving a bus and putting up with crazy people like you all day? That's worth a heck of a lot more than $25 an hour...

At lesat construction workers don't have to deal with High School kids....

I remember in High School the TTC drivers would have a real tough time with mouthy and rude kids who did not respect the drivers at all. And on top of that the bus would be filled with kids..

Could ruin anybody's day....

LMFAO! You sure taught him a lesson. :p

I was thinking to myself how funny it would be to see the driver close the doors on you when you have one foot on and one foot off. Classic!

(on a side note, let's be honest shall we? There's a heck of a lot of people out there who just can't stomach the fact that someone else has a better paying job with better benefits than they do. It's a combination of envy and jealousy, plain and simple. Ask them if they'd want to drive a bus for a living and they'll tell you "Hell no! I'm above that!". Then ask them if a bus driver should be paid $25/hour and they'll tell you "Hell no! The greedy bastards!". Suck and blow folks, suck and blow.)

There was a time when that would have happened. Now the TTC pays out settlements to idiots who injure themselves when its their own fault. No way is a driver going to drag a passenger on one leg even if he has it coming. Even when they're rear ended, the TTC blames them for involvement in an accident. Hell if they experience mechanical failure they are questioned as to how abruptly they operate the pedals.

Considering the level of responsibility, the high standards they have to uphold for a decade prior to hire, throughout their training and employment, they are not overpaid at all. 25 an hour is about 50K a year before deductions. It's not exactly a wealthy existence. I made that much under the table delivering pizza and writing web content. I dont envy the drivers for the assholes they have to smile and greet. There are people on these buses I wouldn't sit next to on a lifeboat if my cruise ship was sinking.

Eveytime i get off the bus with my huge stroller, I struggle to get off the bus and the driver doesn't help me.
I ask for help and i don't get it. The imfamous line I get from them is "my back, I cant lift"
WELL....maybe if you didn't sit around on you fat all all day you woudn't have a bummed back...over paid pricks!!!!
1) Why would you take a stroller you can't manage by yourself on to a transit vehicle where it takes up aisle space that paying riders should be able to use? Do you think the world owes you?

2) Don't you want him to " sit around"? That is the standard driving position.

3) Selfish bitch.

Sorry for the language, but it matches yours. When I took my infant son on the streetcar, he was out of the stroller and it was folded as small as it would go before we climbed on.

Maybe show some of the condideration you seem to think you have a right to.

4 peeves:

#1) On my worst ride, the driver left the station ahead of schedule, ran a yellow light, and failed to stop for an elderly passenger at the next stop. He realized his mistake, and pulled over and waited until the old fellow had sprinted half way from the stop to the bus, then pulled away and left him standing there. A few stops down the route, an EE lady with a strong accent stood outside the bus and asked a question about his route. He slammed the door in her face and drove away without answering her.
#2) Saturday, the operator on my streetcar had road rage issues. She stopped the car and stuck her head out the window to yell at a cabbie and call him names (car #4083, 1:00 p.m. Sept 3, outside Oakwood LCBO). In that emotional state, I doubt that she was capable driving safely. I imagine she gets like this frequently.
#3) Today, both of the buses which pass my office arrived at the subway several minutes after they were due to depart. Although they were already running late, both drivers took a break (clearly not a bio break because they stayed on their buses) prior to boarding passengers for the next trip.
#4) I really resent the drivers who talk on their cellphones while they're driving. They're endangering their passengers and everyone else on the road.

Sometimes I feel like a lot of these jerks make a game out of doing the worst job possible without being caught. I think a lot of others act like they love their jobs, but hate the passengers. I agree that the old ones are the worst. The good ones almost always turn out to be young.

I have been using TTC on a regular basis since my return to GTA back in '96. For the most part drivers I have encountered are pretty much OK. As some one here already suggested often when the bus is not too full (or near empty) I sit up front and talk to the driver. No driver has ever refused to talk to me and if anything they seem to appreciate it.

If I had any complaints about my experience with riding the TTC my complaints against the riders would far out weigh the number I might have against drivers.

Stupid people whom block escalators and stairways. People who block doorways. People who dare to take an extra seat for their oversize bags during rush hour. People who talk loudly on their cell phones on the bus or streetcar. People who hold up the entire bus or streetcar arguing about expired transfers or trying to go back on with same transfers they came downtown on. (Just pay again or get off already) People who can't wait 3 mins for the next bus and have to try and force their way on when there is so little room the driver can't even close the door. People who won't farking move back even when the driver asks nicely four or five times. I think that is my pet peeve there. I mean MOVE to FUCK back assholes. HELLO. Farking assholes just stand there and look dumb. GRRRRRR. People who get into arguments with their SOs or whoever on their cell phones or even in person sometimes while riding any TTC vehicle. And last but not least for now... people who come on the bus or street car with oversized strollers and then sit right by the front door blocking everybody who is trying to get on or off. Or at the very least forcing people to squeeze around them. And then they get pissed off because nobody will help them.

Yeah, we all work hard. And if a construction worker gets pissed off, he can hit something with a hammer, or the janitor can "go clean something" out of sight. The TTC driver's can't do either of those things to take a break from the BS.

That's why they take it out on other passenegers - i.e. bypassing stops and ignoring questions. The Janitor cannot piss anyone off as he is as invisble and derided as anyone can be. The construction worker si so closely supervised he cant drop a stud on the floor without scrutiny from 4 different bosses and a union shop steward.
