Rust Proofing

Maxie:

I've been using Krown once a year and it's holding up pretty well. Cost is about $120/year and it is a bit messy at the start.

Should a car be rust proofed by a professional every year?

I'm more worried about the underbody and insides than the outside body. I want my car to run as long as possible. It hasn't been rust proofed since I bought it 7yrs ago.

Ziebart dries out...Krown might cost you $100-$120 per year, but in the long run you're better off, the body will hold up longer.

If rustproofing is so good for a car, why does the dealer not rustproof it when you lease one? He still owns it and you'd figure he'd want to keep the car in good shape for resale.

Exactly.

Rust proofing is a complete and utter scam.

Do you know, there is not one reputable scientific study that shows it to work. It's a waste of money.

The best thing you can do to prevent rust is keep your car clean.

The dealers love to sell this shit because it's pure unadulterated profit. That, and it voids your factory warrantee. I don't know about you, but I prefer to have a factory warrantee verses any joe blow rust proofing warrantee. These undercoating guys always have a pile of weasel clauses in their contracts that basically says that if you don't have the crap redone or at least touched up every year, then you are shit out of luck.

Besides, with the metal treatment processes now and the various corrosion resistant alloys, you don't have to worry about rust as much as the good old days.

What about the car washes. I use the Esso touchless basic wash, does it wash the underbelly of the car?

I dunno, depends on the wash.

The one thing you have to wash is that your car wash uses fresh water and not recycled water.

Otherwise, you are spraying liquid salt all over the underside of your car.

I swear by Krown rust control. My car is '83 cutlass supreme with out a speck of rust on it, all because of krown treatments every year. The rear frame rails are solid with no surface rust or weak spots at all, the floor pans are still in great shape as well.

New cars get treated by the factory and often come with some sort of corrosion warranty.

Do you drive the Cutlass in the Winter?

I finally retired my 1990 Chev Beretta GT after 16 years of use. Never felt the need to rustproof it as the panels were double galvanized except the roof.

Only rust on it was the result of accident damage that was repaired. Some of the fluid lines started to rust out after 14 years because they are just mild steel.

you haven't rust proofed your car in 7 years? WOW.
I'm almost as bad, but sorta caught it in the bud.
First before you go, either wash the underbody, or, I believe at Krown, once up on the hoist, they will shoot the under belly with some warm water...(i think).
Washing it regularly, on those nice days during winter, isn't a great idea.
It's actually bad, if you think about it, you're just giving more fuel for the rust to work.

That's why I laugh at people lined up for those touchless car washes when there's one nice day during the winter months. If any salt got under their car and stuck, mixed with water, guess what...? ;)

It's never too late after 7 years of NOT doing it, but just don't expect a perfectly clean, rust free, under body either.

Oh and after rust proofing, don't wash your car for at least a week.
If it rains, whatever, no control over that, at least it's not active powered water shooting up at the rust proof, it's just water being kicked up from the tires, not that big a deal.

it is a daily driver, belonged to my grandfather before me. I do believe the krown makes a difference only because another family member's vehicle that has never had the treatment and was cared for in the same way as my cutlass, has rusted out around the doors, roof, and other areas.

Hey,

Get it rust proofed every year!! You will be happy you did!! Krown is one of the best on the market!! It runs into all the nooks and crannies, which is where the protection is needed the most!! The OEM ( Dealer ) stuff is that carmel crap, thick and gooy, and it sticks exactly where it is sprayed, and will not run!! Krown is the only way!! And don't wash it for atleast 3 weeks after the rust proofing is done!!

Also, beware of car washes that filter and reuse the water!! You are washing your car with salt water if it is filtered, because the filters don't get all the salt/calcium out!!

Hope this helps!!

Hey,

Well give the place a visual. Usually they will have a large room where the filtering is done. The easiest way is to ask. The one I use does not filter their water ( Yet!! ) but I am pretty sure all the niew ones have to because of enviromental reasons!!

If you have a newer car, rust proofing may void its (corrosion) warranty, so check first. Also, the aftermarket coatings could clog the little drain holes in your car, preventing water from draining properly, making the problem worse.

Hey,

Thats the point of Krown, it will not clog!! If you buy new, do not let them sell you a Permashine!! A total waste of money!!

La la land
money back

Some cheap guy I know had his vechile rust proof every year. He kept the receipts. Always did it at the same place Lubricare. Then 8 - 10 years later rust started showing up, went to the manager show him the rust. Then he showed the manager the receipts and highlighted the warranty, the manager wrote him a cheque for 1300+.
