The connection is that Henry Dundas delayed abolition of slavery of black people.
So they wanted a name that would replace his, and instead celebrate black history/heritage.
Sankofa is a Ghanian word meaning "go back and get it" referring to learning from the past to move forward.
Ghana was also the center for British slave trade if I am right.
So all in all, I think it is a thoughtful name change. Also has a nice ring to it.
I also like your suggestion or a variation of an indigeneous name would have been equally desirable.
But there will always be detractors who will argue it is just wasteful use of money.

Changing preexisting names based on the outcry of a small fringe social lobby is illogical.

I can guarantee you 99% of Torontonians have no idea who Henry Dundas is.

SO and I were around that area last year when they announced the renaming of the square and gave a dollar value allocated to renaming the signs. Loved the tag that funding isn't from the public coffers.

To be honest, I didn't see any signage calling it Dundas Square.

We were there 4 times and it kind of became an obsession to find one sign. Again nothing.

I lean left; however feel this was a mistake. Own your past as you learn from it. Erase it and assume the risk it will repeat.

Lots of wonderful stories of communities adding to the success of this city. There was no need to create this fakery should the name Dundas repel us. Here is a thought Sniderman Square in honour of Sam the record man. An iconic staple of that area.
