(CNN) During a live televised interview in Paris Thursday, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said it was a mistake to admit Greece to the euro in 2001.

"Let's be clear; it was a mistake," Sarkozy told French television.:thumb:

"Greece came into the Euro with numbers that were false and its economy was not prepared to assume an integration into the Eurozone. It was a decision that was taken in, I believe, 2001, for which we now are paying the consequence."

If they were fed the wrong numbers, was the decision really a mistake? If the numbers really were up to snuff, would Greece be in the crisis it is in today? Even in hindsight, it's difficult to tell.

The mistake may not be their fault but it was still a mistake, for which they are now paying.
I suppose it was at that. What I meant to ask: was it the right decision based on the info they had?

Lots of mistakes were made by many European countries. Their nanny state entitlements have bankrupt the community and they are taking the global economy down with it.

The Euro was a mistake to begin with
Time will prove you can not have a common currency without a common fiscal policy.

I suspect that time will also show that one or all of Spain, Portugal, Italy and Ireland cooked the books to join and they also have a god awful debt mess.
German's must be so pissed as they will have to pay for the excess of other less disciplined governments.

Hey, I was dressed as a Greek for Halloween. Do you know where I can find Germans to lend me money ? .

Why work when there are morons who work hard for money. I want to invest my loan back in Germany.
