i have fta now and its great - 1200 channels. my dad has the atmega and i'm not sure what he should do::

buy an fta for 200 OR spend $75 to have the dealer load the tsop etc. i don't have that equipment, but have the atmega skills

For now, just download and use the Atmega N2 freeware available on most of the websites.

Unfortunately, you can't just download and use the atmega n2 freeware without modifying your receiver first with certain tools that most novice satelite users don't have.

i guess the advantage of fta receivers now is that you can use one receiver to get both bev/dish with only 2 dishes/3lnbs.

This is what's up in the Satellite testing world ... from what I've read

ExpressVu is down on FTA because of the move to Nagra3. I belong to a few Satellite Forums and I've seen nothing about Atmega working so I would call BS on I69norm.

DishNet is still up with Atmega and FTA receivers but they have started their N3 card swap so it will be down at sometime in the future.

DirecTV has not been publicly cracked but you can get a subbed bin for about $50/month ... so why bother?

I wouldn't buy any new equipment right now if I was you. Wait until N3 is fully cracked (if it gets cracked) and see what equipment works.

Always could because they use the same DVB delivery format. The amount of LNB's and dishes depends on what you want to see. If only regular channels then 2 dishes 3 LNB's. If you want HD as well, you'll need 5 LNB's with 3 dishes or 1 regular and 1 large (to get 3 sats).
