All three members of the Shafia family have been found guilty of first degree murder. Canada has set an example for dealing with honour killings. They were charged with killing three female members of the family and a first wife due to their conduct.

No chance of parole for 25 years, so that means they have just become millionaires at taxpayers expense. Bring back the death penalty and exercise it publicly!

Didn't take the jury long, that usually means guilty, it was a matter of first or second degree. This chapter is finally closed, the jury did well.

The Criminal Code needs to be revised so that Honour killings can be dealt with as gendercide with an automatic first degree murder conviction. The sooner humanity breaks away from organized voodoo the better.

I think the criminal code handled this one quite well, don't you? As the judge pointed out at the trial, it doesn't matter that it was an honour killing. It matters that it was planned in advance--which it was. They're all going away for 25 years with no chance for parole. Good riddance!

It's not going to be a deterrent. To these people, defending the family's honor is of the highest importance. Better to die with intact honor than live without it.

We need to focus as a society to confront radical fundamentalism wherever and whenever it reveals its ugly head.

By your statement there is no possible deterrent.

Not to be a spelling Nazi but "know weasal" counsellor? Maybe "now weasel"?

I agree, these are despicable cowardly low life scumbags who still have lots of family to kill and many years for the reasons to keep their good family name to accumulate!
It would be. I really need to slow down when I type...oh well...

Yes indeed, good riddance to these 3! Also, there is no guarantee of release after 25 years! They are only 'eligble' for parole then.
However, I'm curious to find out if the new changes to the Criminal Code kicks in in this case e.g. one of these changes calls for CONSECUTIVE sentences in the case of 2 or more victims...I suspect that the Tory Senate has not added their 'rubber stamp' yet, so the old concurrent sentencing would still apply! But future 'Honor' killers could spend the rest of their natural lives in prison, in similar circumstances! a more appropriate sentence!

I'm pleased with the verdict but you just know that an appeal will be filed to drag the whole thing out.

I thought they can try for parole after 15 years?

If that is the case why did they fake their innocence?

People who place such a high value on their honor are hypocritical
1. they do not value life
2. they will lie, cheat, deceive and other dishonorable things to conceal their evil deeds done in the name of their Honor.

These nuts killed their own family members to save their honor
Imagine if you would up in a disagreement (a traffic accident, a business deal gone bad, dating a daughter) with nuts who view the world this way
I do not want people in my country who think this way

I hope this sends a very loud message that Canada will not tolerate such barbaric behavior

I hope they rot

There's likely to be an appeal. I understand there was a shortage of direct/first hand evidence that the defendants were involved.
Maybe you weren't following the trial.

There was strong forensic evidence that their second vehicle was present at the scene at the time, arising from a broken taillight on the vehicle that went into the water, a broken headlamp on the second vehicle, and the path of the victims vehicle as marked in the soil at the scene.

The son placed himself in that second vehicle, having driven to Montreal, staged a second accident, and then returned to Kingston.

The mother admitted to being at the scene at the time of the incident, while on the witness stand.
