I think they trade Marner to a team trying to reach the Cap floor in the West...Utah is a good landing spot.
As long as he's gone. My son is a huge Devils fan and follows them closely and he is not happy with the hire.
My "prediction" of Marner and the cup was nothing more than proposing a scenario that would be highly embarrassing to the Leafs.
I agree with all you wrote. Since they changed the coach they shouldn't change the core right away. See what effect the new coach has first. I'll also add they should consider bringing back Domi and Bertuzzi. Both got better as the year went on, especially Domi. However, they should only bring them back if they agree to reasonable contracts. Nothing more than 3 years.
Under new ownership, I don't think that Utah will penny pinch around the cap like Arizona. So a contract like Marner where the cash payout is nothing is not going to have extra value to them.
Also not very confident that Utah will be on the list Marner will agree to. (if he even gives a list). Logistically though its a trade that could make sense otherwise.
Didn't take Sheldon Keefe long to get another NHL job...these coaches get recycled from team to team, like Peter DeBoer is on his 5th team.
I like Keefe but he wasn't the right coach for Toronto. Not hard nosed enough and the players didn't respect his authority. Perhaps it will be different for him in Jersey. They got nailed with injuries last year but there's a lot of young talent there - Jack Hughes, Nico Hischier, Luke Hughes, Simon Nemec, Dawson Mercer etc. Its a good opportunity for him out of the spotlight.
