A hilarious slam of the Networks at a time when they deserved it.
I especially liked the scene where Audrey Baranishyn - a real solid Gold dancer was having her costume scrutinized by the Network Censors. Apparently you were supposed to able to see her nipples, though I don't remember if you could or couldn't.
Bill Murray's Character at one point when planning his Christmas Special said something like , "I dont just want them anxious to see it, I want them to be so scared to miss it!" It was meant to epitomize the lengths networks would go to to attract viewers - especially at Christmas. Even more true of reality TV program creators. Murray's character's bad taste knew no bounds - in their depiction of the Network Special Special Buddy Hacket was Scrooge, Jamie Farr was Jacob Marley, John Houseman was the Narrator (America's favorite old fart) and Mary Lou Retton was Tiny Tim -- with her grande finale of throwing away the crutches and doing a triple flip.
But the movie itself was no better than the Christmas Special they were depicting -- trying to make it's mark as a real peace of pop culture with Bobcat Goldthwaite and Alfre Woodard splitting the role of Bob Cratchet, Buster Poindexter and Carol Kane as the ghosts of Christmas Past and Present.
Someone has to do a movie about an executive taking reality programming too far. Maybe it will all stop by then.
