personal trainers are only good if you lack the knowledge/motivation to do it yourself.......with the high tech equipment out there now a days all you need is an introductory lesson on how each machine works and for which muscle group...( and there is usually a diagram on the machine to explain it....after that you're just pissing away your money on a trainer.

If my''trainer'' can't hang and bang with me during my workout.....pound for pound...then he is of no use to me!

Never understood this ...I need motivation bullshit....look in the mirror...or check your cholesterol levels...blood pressure levelx.....THATS your motivation!!!

But thats just me.....
Lmao! I know your post was not meant to be funny but it made me laugh. I'm lazy and I like what I see in the mirror so far. However health wise I need to get my butt in the gym with or without a personal trainer.

I did try a spin class once and loved it! Definitely gonna try that again soon, and yes the treadmill is boring me to tears lol. I don't do much weight lifting more interested in staying tight and toned. I'm also interested in trying yoga, being a little more flexible won't hurt anything ;)
without a proper goal, it's no wonder you lag in motivation. "tight and toned" is hard to define. and even harder to suggest what exercises would provide that. some people go and do a generic workout with the goal of "keeping fit". really, we could restate their goal as "going to the gym". nothing wrong with that if it works.

i suggest thinking about your goal. measure your performance as it is now and see about improving it over the next couple months. perhaps lift heavier, perhaps more reps in same amt of time, run faster or further. i.e.: pick a measureable goal and work towards it. good luck. starting out in reasonable shape sure helps.

Motivation is a big issue for lots of people...that is why there is a huge industry of motivational speakers, books, webinars etc. Be clear on your WHY! Keep visual reminders of why you are doing it around you...pictures of beaches and bathing suits, EKG print outs! whatever it takes ;)
I like the workout buddy suggestion. A gym where you get to know people when you go at a regular time is the "healthy" equivalent of Cheers. This social network...keeps me going.
With regards to using the equipment...it is more than just looking at the pictures. I was doing that, then had a personal trainer watch me...change up my posture, my grip a bit...and wow, whole new experience on the equipment and muscle soreness afterwards. A trainer once a month or so to check out your "style" on the equipment and introduce knew exercises into your routine is really beneficial...also motivating because when there is a month or so between sessions you want to be able to show some progress!
Good luck...like sex, it should be FUN!

If you want to try a FUN fitness class at a gym, go for Zumba. It's super fun AND a great workout. If you're looking to tone up more with weights (and every woman SHOULD do resistance training........excellent for increasing bone mass and preventing osteoporosis), then I suggest working out with a buddy. It's motivating to know someone is counting on you to be there and you can push each other to go when one of you is "being lazy".

If you are hooked on the personal trainer idea, book a few sessions to get some ideas for new exercises, proper form and a baseline for the amount of weight you are safely capable of lifting.

If you're going to use a personal trainer, check out his/her credentials first! It's pretty expensive to use a PT, so make sure this person doesn't just have a "Good Life Fitness *A* Certification" or something silly like that. These certifications quick courses given by the gym to their trainers, and does not teach them how to effectively work core muscles.

I've dated a Personal Trainer with a kinesiology degree, and it's surprising who can pass as personal trainer these days.
