Glenfiddich is a mild 15 year old brew that is quite tasty.

Strange, but I have had the gold, black & red blends of JW and prefer the red for some reason - We all have different tastes. Basically though, blended should always taste different because it is as it states...Blended!

As for bourbons I used to enjoy Jim Beam's but after drinking scotch for a stretch, the harshness of Jim Beam's bourbon stands out.

Regular whiskey is just too sweet for my taste

As for scotch - Personally I like it on the rocks.

I still enjoy the Blends...JW Black is good
Famous Grouse is nice
But strangley enough..for real drinking (Not just sipping) I can't find a better blend than Balletines.
BTW Knob Creek is a great Bourbon as is Maker's Mark!
Cheers!

BTW, I hear Diageo introduces Green Label -15 years Blend if I remember right to the market. Anybody tried that one?
The Duty Free at Pearson had a gift pack of small bottles with a Black, Gold and Grren back near Christmas. I tried the Gold and Green, but would still prefer the Black. I also don't mind Chivas on the rocks.

As far as malts go, Lagavulin 16 yrs. is my personal favourite, but also have Glen Fiddich, Dalwhinnie and Bowmore on hand. Not a fan of the Dalwhinnie but that may have more to do with the fact that it was a gift and not something I selected personally.

My monicker pretty much is a result of my passion for The Regal.

My wife knows that when I start to pour it, the bottle will begone and the night will have been a fun filled evening. Of course it is more fun if you have a scotch drinker to share...

I love it so much, I named my Dog - Chivas, natch!

As for red wines, I agree with Chile, however, I am now stocking some great South African wines. You might want to try them out....

I had Johnnie Walker Blue Label many times....I don't know why it is so expensive when it is not a single malt....I think it is blended

I'm not a big scotch drinker.....maybe once a week a glass

Oban is my personal favourite, drunk neat.

I also like Macallan, and IMHO, the 12 year is just as good as the 18 and 25. In any case, after three or four, I defy anyone to be able to tell the difference, or, more to the point, to care. :D

But, let's face it, there's no such thing as a bad single malt whisky, just some better than others.

You have never had single malt until you have had........................

Years ago I met a trucker that brought the big tankers of whisky from the Meaghers distillery to Montreal so that it can be bottled at the Seagrams bottling plant. When the truck had emptied its load they tell him to roll out of the yard and the truck is still leaking 25 year old single malt whisky out of its tap.
This trucker would often stop outside the truck yard and catch some of this whisky in a big gallon jar for himself. On this occasion he told me that he had to ditch the gallon jar because he had a load of other materials to bring to the states. (he can not get passed the border with a gallon of whisky) So he gave me the whisky.
This whisky was straight from the aging barrels, and it still had what looked like charcoal cinders in it. After filtering through a coffee filter this whisky was the best whiskey I have ever had. This stuff got you high in 30 minutes with just one shot, and 30 minutes later you came back down without even noticing the effects coming or going.

I agree, excellent thread.

I wholeheartedly agree that a good blend is as good as a decent single malt. A neat Cutty or Grouse and a mid range Cuban (partagas, h upmann, bolivar etc) is all you really need.

A 25 Macallan and a Monte "A" are just overkill. If you had a blind tasting of both, you would might be surprised what you would choose.

IMHO.

Another good value single malt is Balvenie 10 year old. It has remained around $40 a bottle for many years.
I agree the Balvenie is probably the best bang for the buck.

You should give the Double Wood 12yr a try. It's also a good score at $54.

echo great thread!

If you like Glenmorangie and will be travelling on Air Transat this month, you are in luck. The inflight duty free is offering the 10 year old Glenmorangie at
CAD 34 per bottle. It usually goes for about CAD 45 a pop at LCBO.

Don't know how long the promotion will last though.

And I must thank you all for all input here , which I found invalubale and extremely helpful . Cheers to you all Scotch fans.

Hemmingways

Ahhh, a glass of Johnny Blue at Hemingways, there is nothing like it. Now if only they would allow us to have cigars in there again. Does anyone know of any upscale joints downtown that have a cigar room and good single-malt selection? I love WEST and Hemmingways but its only on rare certain nights that I dare pull out a bullet point in them anymore.

Does that joint still exist? Wow, there once was this hot little waitress down there...I was in grade 13....
Yeah, Hemmingways is still at the heart of the Yorkville scene. Its funny, I hear stories about my dad going there because thats where all the drugged up hippes were back in the day. He laughed at me when I told him men go there in suits and ties now......I hesitated to tell him not to laugh at my clients ;)
I dont know, i just still love yorkville, its like a small town.
