Today's smartphones have better specs :p

I strongly suggest making a backup of the data to an external hard drive and then buying a new computer ( laptops go for $400 ).

^^^ Great advice. I wouldn't sink any money into this old computer via more ram etc.

Older technology parts are not only harder to find, but are expensive compared to newer better performing technology.

The price you might pay for a stick of ram may be more than your entire computer is worth.

Computers have also come down in price.

The money sunk into the old could make up and therefore offset a considerable portion towards a new one.

Though it has slowed a bit, computer technology changes remain fast paced.

As trod suggested, get an external drive and transfer over your stuff.

Then transfer to a new computer.

Maybe format the hard drive and donate the old computer to someone less fortunate.

some things that might help:
-run "disc cleanup" it's at all programs>accessories>system tools
-run "disc defragmenter"
-add more ram
-run your anti virus
-make sure you have all updates, if there are any :p
-clear your history
-get rid of any files or programs you don't need, put in recycle bin.
If you use itunes, you may have 100+ podcasts just using up disc space.

Are you still on dsl or cable internet?
Does you computer slow down at about the same time every day?
These would be internet issues and not necessarily your computer.
plus one

My computer is painfully slow. The numbers on the front are 335processor, 80GB, CD-RW, 256MB, these numbers mean nothing to me. Do I have to take it in to a computer place and have it upgraded or can I try cleaning it up on my own to make it faster?
Way over time to buy a new computer.

I think the OP is trolling but in case he is not. Most of the suggestions posted wont work. His Celeron is too old, too underpowered, and too outdated for modern computing. If he wants to do the old things from 2004 on his computer, go for it. But to keep up with modern computing, a new computer is indicated. My assessment is Not nice, not pretty but accurate.

Last summer, I tried running some linuxes on an old celeron laptop with equivalent specs to the OP's. Even the stripped down distros crawled.

Not true.

I have a single core Dell P4 Celeron 2.8GHz but it has 1 gig of RAM....it will take 4 gigs of RAM if I want to get more RAM. RAM is still available and not that expensive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...in DDR SDRAM&bop=And&Order=RATING&PageSize=20

Anyways it runs XP and 32bit Ubuntu 11.04 very well. In fact XP boots up just as fast as Ubuntu. It came with a 40GB HDD and a second 120GB HDD was added by me. It runs fine. Got it on CL a couple years ago for 80 bucks.

Wow, never heard that number in a while.. Go get yourself a new PC for under $600. (just not a AMD) It will be like going from a 1988 Hyundai Pony to a 2010 Honda Accord V6

FYI

This is not the best time to buy a computer, if you can wait the next good opportunity is in October to mid November after the back to school rush. There are good deals at Christmas time, but after Christmas there are amazing opportunities. I helped a lady buy a Asus i7 ( super fast )computer for $599 after last Christmas. At the low end, you can have 2 computers for $399 and one would be slow computer ( but much faster that what the OP has ) and the other would be 3 or 4 times faster at the same price. If you are comparing 2 or more computers, put up the stats and I will tell you which is best. It is quite complicated when you can have an i3 that is actually faster than an i7 chip.

You are better off getting a new PC for ~$400 that will be about 10X faster.
The specs on new laptops today even below $400 are scary: 6-8GB RAM, 500GB HDD, 16x DVD-R, new generation Intel processors, etc.

Pretty impressive, indeed. Visit a Futureshop/Best Buy; you'll be impressed with what you can get for the price.

You can argue that not getting the new computer is costing the OP time / money. Amortize the price of the computer over 10 years and you will be spending less than $3.50 a month. You will be getting a better, faster computer with many more abilities and features.
