Pretty impressive.

And those scratches will just buff out, no reason to inform your insurance company.

Somewhat deceptive photography, in that you don't really see how angled that wall is unless you slow down the film. This is why the passenger door still works.

Also, just because the car stays 'somewhat' intact, there is very little structure in a Smart car to absorb any of the energy. What the structure can't absorb, the passengers will be subjected to.

A Smart car, IMO, is a vehicle that should be treated like a moped and restricted to non-major highways.

I agree. Far too many cutaways and selective camera angles. And you don't get to see what happened to the driver or crash test dummy.

The little bits and pieces falling out of the car when he opend the door is all that was left of the crash test dummy.

The should run that car head on into a typical 3 - 4 thousand pound car moving in the opposite direction and see what happens.

I don't know of many cars that would look any better than that after hitting that same wall at 70mph (112km/h).

Anywhere there's a Strip Joint
I've seen a few on the road lately, and was wondering about their safety. IMHO they sholud be confined to small little towns...just good enough to go to the store or Timmy's.:D The highways or major streets..forget it, a death trap. Put it up against a tall Suv/pickup, and see if it survives.

Sure the slightly angled head on collision doesn't seem to really wreak havoc... but what about a side impact!?! I'm sure that thing'll split into a billion pieces just like how you would too!!!

They also should've put a crash test dummy in there too... why didn't they do that?

All in all, I would not buy a Smart Car and get involved in a collision, there are so many giant cars and trucks on the road that I'm not worried about collisions at 70 MPH but rather the fact that a Chevy Yukon will be driving over and on top of my and my Smart Car like a monster truck rally!!!

It's incredible that the doors open. But I don't think it matters what car you are in, if you get into a 70 mph head on collision with an immovable object you were going to be messed. After the doctors are done with you, you'll have more metal and plastic in you than the smart car itself. Assuming there's something left of you to piece together.

Pretty impressive, I didn't think it would be that intact.....As stated, you'd be toast if you were inside but at least you'd be somewhat in one piece. I also notice they didn't show the leg and foot spaces inside the vehicle. With the damage that was done to the front end, I'd imagine that your legs would be mangled from the knees down.

I too think they are great cars for city dwellers. You can park em just about anywhere, maneuverable as all get out, and great on gas/less pollution.

IMHO after driving a motorcycle on highways and city streets for 30 yrs these things are just not safe for highways. The aerodynamics alone make me shudder and the short wheelbase? sheesh...

When watching the video I thought for sure the thing would hydroplane the puddles and go rolling into the ditch. I just can't believe all the wankers bombing down the 401 in these things....they're nuts!
