Software question from the Techies

Quick question, what is the best software for general applications in working with photographs. I use all Microsoft products including XP Professional and need to process digital photography from a 5.1 megapixel camera. I am currently running Microsoft Picture It! 2001. There must be better software packages around now for laptops and small networks? Also. don't mind spending money for the software if it decreases the problems and doesn't create more.

Photoshop ...... and as Winston says use Elements for basic image manipulation or even MAcromedia's Fireworks if it is for the web as it is soooooo much better then Photoshop if you are doing web work.
Personally though i use GIMP as it does everything that Photoshop does. Photoshop is huge program so don't feel overwhelmed by it as you will never know more then 70 % of what it can do even if you use it 24/7 ...... just as u do get to know it the 1 year Adobe updates comes out with new features.

Open Source Alternative !

One can always go open source: GIMP is the open source alternative to photoshop. (http://www.gimp.org/)
