Ban all religion... in public.

No religious symbols, no speaches or rhetoric, no churches/mosques/synagogues (sp)....

In private - do what you want, believe what you want, pray to whom you whish.

If your God is THE God then you will go to heaven and the rest of us will not. No need for you to worry about it.

Is there a God?

Or is religion is a tool of the weak minded. A crutch for those that can not stand on their own feet and say "I am responsible for my life".

Do we create the good, and yes bad, in our lives - or is there a mysterious all pwerful being in control of our fates.

Is it logical to believe that a God snapped his fingers and created the earth and heavens and man - and then simply walked away and left us to kill each other?

I have my beliefs as do most - but one thing I know for sure is that more people have been killed in the name of religion than any other cause. So why not just leave it at home and not try to force your beliefs on others?

And what moral authority and socially responsible
institutions will we substitute.......

So, how will you fill the void you created?
For starters you just have to follow the 'Golden Rule'.

Jesus Christ in the New Testament replied as much when questioned about what moral code(s) one needs to follow in life. Christ responded, just follow the Golden Rule, that's all one has to do.
The Golden Rule is not intrinsically a religious concept. It predates Christ going back to classical pagan Greco-Roman law and served a proper utilitarian function then of bringing order to the natural chaos in an unstructured society.
Religion, a man-made concept, came about out of human desires, wishes, frailties, wish fulfillment, for something 'super' to believe in. You could say God is the adult version of Santa Claus, Easter Bunny & the Tooth Fairy all rolled up into one! Some people just need something to believe in and God and Heaven soothes their psyches.

That being said I've always felt there is nothing in itself wrong with religion, the problems come about when too many prople start taking religion too damn seriously!.......;)

i.e. Dubya says,
God talks to him !!!

Assuming it is, what can we do?

As I see it since there are, and always will be, people of which you speak, then they will always need a "crutch" ... taking away their "crutch" will not result in a "weak minded" person being "strong minded", it just throws them into a state of Chaos.

There have been attempts to replace that "crutch" ... patriotism, nationalism, populism etc ... but those have proven to be equally as corruptible and dangerous.

"Reasonable" people need to stay vigilant and fight these "leaders of the crutch" every time they step out of line and attempt to force their morality on the rest of the world.

Simple minds seek simplistic solutions.

If anything, religion teaches us that humans are flawed.
Eliminating the moral voice of conscience does not eliminate
the evil it speaks against.
Well said.
