1. There is a time for drama, and then there is the necessity for sober reflection and deliberate action.
"Elbows Up" was a good campaign slogan. Got you to the PMO. As was summoning Charles & Camilla, to show we are "different". Enough of the drama now.
Do not for a moment forget that governments are transient but geography is enduring. Long after this or that president is gone, Canadians will always have their neighbours to the south. Most of them,
in so far as they know anything about us, view us with as friendly eyes as we view them. Create conditions to sustain this friendship and for it to flourish. Reach out. Hockey is not an appropriate metaphor.
2. National Security.
Canada's national security cannot be outsourced. It has to be devised by Canadians, for Canada. Do no be seduced by the hegemonic ambitions of partners. Nor can it be bought by paying some club dues of this or that percent. Be particularly wary when partners demand that your "dues" be spent on expensive weaponry of dubious utility, which only they will provide. Domes of one or another metalic provenance. Or expensive
ships and airplanes which could be sitting ducks for swarming cheap drones or hypersonic missiles. Warfare is changing fast.
3. Canada's Defence.
The best defence is not to create enemies. And to reach out to old "perceived" enemies with a hand of peace. You need not apologize for inviting Modi; it shows wisdom and good statesmanship. You might have
noticed that there are two "hot" regions of the world where major forces are trying to enlist Uncle Sam to fight THEIR wars. One against Russia. The other against Iran. Either one could become a nuclear holocast. Canada has no business with either.
4. International relations.
Respect the sovereignty of other nations; do not succumb to the temptation of becoming a drama queen by poking your nose into their internal affairs, even at the cost of losing a few votes. Time to revisit Canada's
relations with major powers which were so long neglected by your predecessors. Remember Thomas Jefferson's famous words: Peace, commerce and honest friendship with all nations, entangling alliances with
none.
5. Ongoing Genocide
You have the power to disentangle Canada from this despicable ongoing genocide and to condemn it unconditionally. Weigh your conscience against that donor cheque.

Canada won’t become the 51st US state – but could it join the EU?
Donald Trump’s extraordinary threats have angered Canadians and Europeans, and the idea of a new kind of transatlantic alliance is gaining traction
