Sammy Sosa just passed the 600 homer plateau. Would he or could he be a first ballot candidate or will the lingering steroid scandal tarnish a great career?

Did he ever test positive/ever convicted of steroids use or just rumors? Serious I have no idea.

(I wish they would take bar Carl Lewis's medals.)

I'm not sure -I think he just kept his mouth shut.....and lost some weight. I know Giambi is under fire, Bonds is standing in the fire but as for Sosa I'm not sure either. Wasn't he at that hearing with Palmeiro, McGwire and the rest of those guys?

Why not then? Lots of "heroes" are honored if they are public steroid users or not.

I think Pete Rose should be in the hall of fame fwiw. He isn't a nice guy but neither are a lot of the other guys already there.

(Sorry for keep going off topic.)

Actually in '05 Sosa's lawyers spoke on his behalf and of course said that he "had never used any illegal performance enhancing drugs.....never injected himself or anybody else."

Palmeiro was the one that was the most animated in his denial of ever using -but then he got caught and that'll cast a long shadow for a HOF bid.

The difference here is Palmeiro got popped on a drug test and Sosa never did. The was always talk, lots of it....rumors, innuendos and such. But Sosa is very well like in his home country (DR) and by the press here. And I guess in the end, isn't the press that votes them into the HOF?

I am for put like an asterisk beside someone who has done some with aid of steroids and got caught in any sport. In reality we will never know 100% who was juiced and who wasn't. It does bring a real meaning to giving 110%.

I think Sosa should go in for sure. He accomplished a lot coming from the DR and doing what he did. Steroids or not.

Dude, why don't you just call him a spear chucker and get it over with.

Sammi has good numbers and if the writers go by numbers alone he's a lock. The problem is he's number 2 in the cloud of suspicion. My problem with that is suspicion should not prevent you from going into the HOF, where we have wife beaters, drunks, drug users, and cheats.

Let's not forget that the Bud "Vince McMahon" Selig, was similarly encouraging his players to use drugs by celebrating Mcgwire-Sosa, and not even having a steroid policy!!!

Sosa only cheated by the corked bat.

Next to the money pit.
An asterisk next to Sosa's name

One look at the annual baseball cards will show how a slim Sosa became a bulked-up Sosa. During the '90's seasons, one has to question MLB policies to check if Creatin considered to be a banned supplement? McGwire was definitely taking Creatin along with other substances.

Should Sosa make it into the HOF? Based on the statistics: yes. Does Sosa deserves to be in the HOF? I'm still pondering if he cheated with banned substance.

That's my two cents.

No, suspicion usually overrides stats, does anyone believe Lance Armstrong didn't use even though he was never caught, everyone in cycling was doping and he wasn't?

Of course it was not banned. Steroids were not even banned until 2002 IIRC !!!

And when they were originally banned it was a chicken shit policy.... annual testing.... only get suspended on the third offence... no public disclosure on first two violations... permanent banning on the SIXTH offence... mandatory counselling sessions for first offence (no fine or suspension and no public discloure). Come on now, that was a joke.

As I said, Selig wanted the players to do steroids. The first steroid policy was so lenient, it was in effect, telling the players that sorry you guys need to take steroids to be competitive. Our policy is not going to stop it.

Now Selig extolls his steroid policy which has finally got much tougher after the government interfered.

Steroids may not have been illegal in baseball, but how about the fact that they are an illegal substance in the US. All these guys will get into the HOF. Do i care, not really. I haven't gone back to baseball since the strike in 1994. I don't care about the sport anymore. Between the salaries and drug questions MLB will not get a cent from me. I will listen on the radio to the Jays, but that is about it. I will not financially support them in any way.

Mcgwire barely got less than 25% of the votes on his 1st time on the ballot. Sosa won't do any better, and likely worse.

ah the roid monkey comment wasnt racial, McGwire, Bonds and Palmeiro are also roid monkeys and should be treated as such, the problem with Sosa is the phoney good guy routine he had us all buying into.

Sosa, on pure stats, is a HOF. He'll get punished by the voters a bit (won't be a first ballot HOF-er) but will eventually get in.

If you listen closely to Sosa's limited admission, he said he did not use any drugs where it was illegal to do so. It was not illegal to use steroids in the Dominican when Sammy bulked up. He was a 'roid monkey'; hope no one jumps down my throat for using this term. I don't care about any HOF; much too easy to get in now.
