AFAIK Toyotas have 2 O2 sensors, one at the exhaust manifold and one at the catalytic converter. It sounds like the cat one as per dealer diagnosis. It SHOULD be easily accessable from underneath. To rest the CEL (check engine light) just disconnect the battery for a few minutes.

Is there a mechanic out there who could do the job for less than 300.

While that used to be the method, I thought that newer cars (post 1995) didn't reset this way....

I had a 2000 Buick Century that was brought brand new and we got 185,000 miles on it..not sure whats that in KM.

After 120,000 the check engine light came on but was going off after a while, then later on maybe 130,000 miles it stayed on, car was running just fine so I took black tape and covered it up :p

Head gasket started leaking bad at 150,000 mile, I dump a few bottles of stop leak until it stop leaking--yes in very hot weather it could over heat--had to shut it down once in a while and go shopping or whatever an let in cool a bit.

That car only had the spark plugs change and the trans replaced-the motor was never opened up and we got a grand for it in trade in.

We have a 1992 Olds with 160,000 miles and it too only hade the plugs replace and the trans is still working OK-shifts hard in the morining, thats it.

We had good luck with GM cars.

The car has four censors, a mechanic asked which one needs to be replaced, the guy who serviced the car at the dealer couldn't say which one it was, how can I find out?
