I've only got basic cable so I only get Sportsnet.

For those who have both, what's the difference?

Apparently, TSN has way better ratings but is it that much beteer?

Enhanced cable gives you all four Sportsnet channels across the country. Atlantic, Ontario, West, and Pacific. Sportsnet is a more international (lots of soccer, rugby, cricket, etc.) and balanced broadcast (still lots of NHL, MLB, etc.). Sportsnet focusses on all Canadian teams in major sports evenly. TSN is a piece of shit. Watched a TSN SportSCentre the other night and out of a 25 minute show at least 15 minutes or 60% of the show was dedicated to the Leafs and Argos. There is a reason people call it the Toronto Sports Network. It really drives a lot of people in other parts of the country insane. And before poeple disagree with me: Yes, I know Toronto is the centre of the universe especially in hockey. Go Leafs G. . . . whatever.

Dj1470,you continue with your crusade against the Leafs(LOL) Yes,not everyone is a Leaf fan but what do you expect them to talk about in Toronto? Ah well. I think both stations have their good and bad points. I watch TSN more than Sportsnet, though sometimes even TSN gets a little boring with sportfishing, lumberjack events, curling, snowmobiling and shows of that nature. On the other hand you can't beat TSN for the variety of sporting events that it broadcasts.I guess we could argue this one til the cows come home, but that's all I wanted to say.

For myself it comes down to the type of sports programs you want to watch. Highlights are highlights either on TSN or Sportsnet. TSN is affiliated with ESPN and Sportsnet with Fox Sports. Maybe the higher ratings are due to the availability of ESPN's wider programming especially NFL pre-game and post game shows as well as Sunday Night football. Sportsnet is improving their ability of live sporting events with obtaining the World Series and March Madness, but TSN will have the greater ratings with more live events such as golf, tennis, nfl, cfl etc. Until these exclusive contracts expire and Sportsnet has an opportunity to acquire some of these they will trail in the ratings.
Check the schedules and what sports you like to see which network appeals to you.

Personally I enjoy both.

If you have basic cable from Rogers, they give you Sportsnet because hey own it. If you have the basic Bell from satelite (some Condos & Rental Buildings offer a choice) then you get TSN and have to buy one level up for Sportsnet.

I've always preferred TSN overall, although lateley I'm not liking it as much.

As it is now, Sportsnet is a must-have for Baseball, while TSN is very Football & Golf intensive. TSN has the better variety.

I watch both TSN and Sportsnet for their live sports programming (NHL,MLB,NFL,EPL,etc). As far as their sports news goes, I dislike Sportsnet and TSN equally. Both "That's Hockey" and "Hockey Central" are complete shit due to the fact that there really isn't that much of interest that happens in the NHL in October, November, December, January and February. I prefer watching The Score for sports news. It's not nearly as annoying IMHO.

This illustrates my point exactly. TSN is not supposed to be just for Toronto. They broadcast the same boring Toronto Leaf, Argo, Raptor, and Jays news all across Canada. People in Regina, Calgary, and Vancouver could give three shits about Toronto. At least Sportsnet has different channels - the Ontario channel focusses on Ontario teams while the Pacific channel focusses on BC teams.
