How often should one get tested for STD?

Where is the best place to do it? At your doctors office?

I'm wondering, going for my yearly checkup, never had a STD test and thinking about getting it.

Every 3 months, or every month if you're very active. Better safe than sorry.

If you are having sex with strangers and/or people of unknown STDs and HIV/AIDS status, you should definitely get tested. How often you should get tested depends on the sexual practices you engage in, with whom, and how often. Talk to your doctor about it. That's what s/he is there for.

You can also make an appointment at the Hassle Free Clinic. They are very sex industry friendly, so you shouldn't be afraid or uncomfortable disclosing your P4P activities. They won't be judgmental, and they will give you accurate information about safer sex practices and testing.

If you are an active member, I'd recommend it. My annual blood work tests have always included basic STD without asking. I did request HIV tests a couple times and even though I shouldn't worry - I'm always relieved by the negative results.

Avoid family Doctor, my doctor wasn't too happy when I ask for STD test done.
I am uncomfortable asking for it from my doctor since he's my doctor for many years but the Hassle Free clinic is like an hr drive. Not sure what to tell my doctor why i need the test.

there are other clinics that provide anonymous and/or walk-in testing - I'm just not able to post a link right now..... others may be able to help you out - otherwise I'll post links for you later on....

(if you're a sexually active adult ~ I don't think your doctor is in any place to judge or question your desire to screen for STDs..... My family doctor routinely asks questions about my reproductive health during check ups- being tested wouldn't raise any eyebrows).

Hey Tony I was in your situation if you have to then say you hook up with a girl on vacation/bar but like I said before I would avoid family doctor. Just go to one of those walk in clinic.

I use the Dr's Office walk in clinic. Never had a problem. I just tell them I had a condom break with a partner I didn't know the status of and that's it. No other questions asked.

The front desk staff do request that you use a real address as there is no other way to notify you of a positive result. I have a postal box at shoppers drug mark so that is no big deal for me. You can rent them monthly if you just want to get a temporary one while you wait for results.

The timing of this thread is ironic in that I just got my most recent test results today.
Squeaky clean bill of health once again.
I get tested every year at my physical, but I do try to get in another round of tests at the half year mark, just to have peace of mind.

Not anymore. Last time I did that doctors told me I had herpes and a variety of other diseases. That's not what I wanted to hear.

I hate all politicians, but why specifically did you decide to make a political jab against Rob Ford in relation to and STD clinic?

Why Hassle free clinic? they do more tests?
Just go to your nearest The Doctor's Clinic. Hassle Free for me is not hassle free. Not only is it downtown, they have limited hours for any joe-blow male.

It's a different story though for sex workers and TGs. Not likely to be judgemental, and in your own element.

Someone mentioned in another thread that he wanted to cut funding for HFC but not sure if that's true. Jennifer was worried about that (frankly, a legitimate concern as it serves the needs of many sex workers and the gay community, and strategically located. It encourages more testing and prompt treatment which is what we need).

Hi babe :)

The Doctor's Clinic said I could go once a week if I wanted to, assuming I have a new sex partner every week.

They are completely non-judgmental. My doctor might ask too many questions (even for a single guy like me!), and probably more to do with OHIP billing (if I were to go say monthly, I think he'd say it's not covered as a preventative measure - only if there's an exposure or part of my annual physical)).

While I will recommend the HF Clinic, I'm not so sure about every 3 or 4 months.

Last time I called HF, the guy got a little pissy with me on the phone once he determined I was not engaging in Bare Back Anal with men. In a nutshell, I was told that if I had been tested within the last 2 years to wait for my 2 year anniversary. Also, you have to wait 3 months since your last Bare back session - which is again bullshit.

HF is set up to treat HIGH RISK people - gay men, IV Drug Users who share needles, Sex workers.

They didn't have too much time for me. Truth be told, my impression was that the guys manning the desk are a little more (nay a lot more) militant Gay Boy than the doctors in the back. They think of the HF as "should be gay only" but since they'd lose their funding if they operated like that, they have to tolerate the straight / slightly kinky community. In a way, I actually understand that, because they undoubtedly get piles of little straight boys and girls who are "over tested" - every time they fuck someone different (which is ABSURD) and they (the little straight boys and girls who are looking for a free BB sex card) are burdening the system - a system which should be there to service those MOST at risk.

So, I just called them up a few weeks later and gave them the wrong (or is that right) answers in order to get an appointment.

My personal opinion would be once a year if you're a straight male and who cares when your last Bare Back sex was. (They figure that you should use condoms for the 3 month period, that way you will know you are clean. I figure, well, I understand that, but there is nothing to say that I had not contracted something prior to that and better to know.)

HIV testing at HF is annonymous, but you need an appointment. They will give you the pop quiz on the phone to see if they even want to see you. They can give the results right on the spot - though they will give you the safer sex lecture. (Mind you, that few minutes you wait for the bubbles in the test kit to form are definitely a time for reflection.)

STD testing is on a Walkin basis, but you need your health card and it takes about a week to get the results.

I'd like to say that it is "Hassle Free" but it's really not. There is hassle. Hours are extremely limited. The one good thing about it though is that you're just another horndog as far as they are concerned and they don't really care what you do in the bedroom.
