Anyone have thoughts on storage? I was considering getting this. http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product...spx?path=c7744ce5b40049e5c02598512e39727aen02

..as opposed to buying my own drive and case and building one, like I did with my 3 other external drives. But I'm thinking just get this WD one and be done with it.
This one is also USB 2.0 and since 3.0 isn't quite the standard yet, not sure I should be too worried about speed just yet?
Thoughts, suggestions?

Why is it only 5400 RPM?

I know it's slow, not even 7200, but for the size and money, it's not THAT bad really.

Prices may be dropping because the 3TB drives are out.
Still I would prefer 7200 RPM.

3TB! Imagine all the lost data if one of these suckers ever crash.
Ever the economical. I purchased a 250G portable disk for $39. I cannot see how I ever would want to back up more than 250G.

With the new Macs offering Thunderbolt technology for data transfer 10 Gb throughput, they're offering external drive by Lacie that are solid state, but very expensive 256 Gb for $1300; patience is in order.

I cannot imagine having to deal with moving large files with USB2 on a frequent basis.. eSata or USB 3 is the way to go if you can equip your computer to handle it.

It'll be fine for backups. it's cheap enough you could back up all your data and store it off-site too.

Eh Gad! Dump Maxtor!
Maxtor has a terrible rep.
I have only 1 80GB Maxtor drive from a 2006 Gateway PC that bit the dust. Pulled it out and used it for awhile. It seemed OK then started making noise. Decided to pull it and put it in one of my Linux machines as a slave. As soon as I fired it up Linux sent a flag to desktop with a report warning that this newly installed Maxtor drive had bad sectors and was failing. It recommended to back it up and replace ASAP.

I've always bought Seagate with no problems.
Had a buddy who builds PCs who steered me to Seagate. He used to use Maxtor all the time because they were cheaper, till a few years ago when Maxtor had those high failure rates then went bankrupt. He dumped Maxtor because too many were failing for him.

Isn't Maxtor owned by Seagate now?

Fuck, here I listen to all you guys telling me that I should not use USB memory sticks for backup, and I buy a portable drive. DO I have to go back to backing everything on cd's?
