I'm trying too suffer through listening to Eric Thomas of Raceline radio fame. Just too repeat. IMHO the fan 590 made a big mistake in getting rid of stormin Norman:( !
I wasnt terribly impressed with Norm's sports knowledge but I will say that I miss hearing him on the air too. I just took him for granted there I guess. Just thought I could always tune into the radio around this late night hour and hear Rumack on the air but now its come to an end unfortunately. I have listened to this guy since the Fan1430 started back in 92 or 93.

I agree the Fan made a mistake letting him go.

Tell me about it!

And I'm sure there are some 590 Exec's who read TERB that realize they made a poor decision. ;)
What! You didn't know? Nelson Millman is a regular here!

Seriously, I listened to Eric Thomas a little bit tonight. He doesn't know shit about shit, unless it has 4 wheels.

Interesting stuff by Kilgore Trout. While evoking sympathy, it makes him seem like a bit of a loser though.

OMG u are sooooooooo damn right about Erik Thomas. While I wasnt a huge Rumack fan in terms of his sports knowledge I will miss him on the air, he was entertaining I thought. And these guys like Erik Thomas and Alex Seirxero are not my cup of tea.

I actually e-mailed the fan590 and complained about them letting Rumack go. Doug Faraway (sp?) e-mailed me back and said they were all upset and that these things are never easy. I always listen late at night and have got so used to his show that it's hard to listen to anything else. Probably won't do any good but I thought I give it a try.

Erik Thomas' voice really irritates me. I think I'm going to have to switch radio stations when ET is on the air. Maybe CFRB:D.

Erik Thomas doesnt seem to know much about anything other than auto racing. I didnt think Rumack was that knowledgeable either but ET is making Rumack look like a sports expert LOL. I dont dislike auto racing but I wish ET had more knowledge on other sports. I dont know he is gonna interview these other guests from other sports.

I think I am gonna email the Fan590 too and tell them that they got to get Rumack back, if not now then eventually at some point they need to bring him back. I'm the same way as you, I got so used to his show, even though i disagreed with Norm quite a bit and wasnt impressed with his sports knowledge I got used to his show. I'm only 30 years old and have been listening to his show since grade 9 so more than half my life Ive listened to him on-air.

A friend of mine who grew up in the same neighbourhood as me works in sports media in Toronto. You'd know his name if I mentioned it.

But, anyway, this friend has known Norm for almost 20 years and once a year or so he sits down with Norm at Tim Horton's or some other place for a coffee for an hour or so and he says that Norm always had a million complaints about what a horrible dump the fan was to work at.

He's applied all over the city at other radio stations or TV stations for work and they won't hire him because he's been stereotyped as the late night vampire at Fan590.

Norm is also unbelievably thin skinned and is deeply offended when athletes don't show him the courtesy and respect he feels he deserves. He was in his glory days in 90's when Fletcher ran the Leafs and Cliff used to have lunch with Stormin Norm every once in a while.

But, Norm's glory days with the Leafs are long gone and at 54 there is a huge generation gap between Norm and younger athletes and they don't want to spend 2 seconds more with him than they need to. Norm finds all this really offensive.

A funny thing about Norm is that he is completely non technological. He never uses computers or email or the internet. Never. If you put him in front of a computer he is literally like a caveman. He has no idea what to to.

Rumack gets newspaper subscriptions from all over North America and shows up at work with two shopping bags filled with newspaper sports sections from all over N.A. He spends a lot of his free time reading sports stories and is endlessly fascinated by all kinds of sports stories.

Anyway, overall I enjoyed Norm's work at the Fan. He was really well informed and did really good interviews.
He's a much more interesting person to listen to than shallow nobodies like Dan Dunleavy or Mike Hogan.
he did say the reason he jumped off the Leafs ship was it wasnt the same team that he cheered for as a kid in the way of Dave Keon and such, but your explanation is very interesting too, also someone else says now he is a Caps fan and he went from a Pirates to oh I was walking around downtown TO today wearing my Evan Longoria jersey, he also says he supports both Chelsea and Liverpool. Why does he not be like most other sports casters and keep his allegiances to himself, his constant team switching has made him look like a total fool.

its not just the team switching but the fact that he is not really fans of the teams he is claiming to be a fan of.

i would be willing to bet that he watched less than 10 Devil Rays games last season. In fact even 10 would be generous. I think he just wears an Evan Longoria jersey so he can walk around town and people will think he is smart and knowledgeable. This guy also talks about Dwight Freeney and marvin Harrison but he hardly watches any games at all.

What ive noticed is that he will hear his guests say something on the air like Brian Heaney or his football expert or his baseball expert will say things and then a week later Norm will be saying the same things and trying to pass it off like its his own knowledge. When really he is just regurgitating what his analysts said and he thinks we as listeners dont notice that.

I find the guy entertaining and I much prefer to listen to him than Alex Seixero or Erik Thomas but Norm wasnt as smart as he led people to believe.

Your right about the newspaper thing Ive heard the same thing he has bags filled with newspapers. Question though. If he actually watches sports then why does he need so many newspapers ?

About the email thing. I heard the same thing that he is not that technological but I have emailed him several times in the past and he has always replied. So maybe he does use email or maybe the guy that was emailing me back wasnt Norm LOL.

Well, I guess he finally got on board the digital revolution.
High speed internet usage started to explode around 1999 and he probably waited 8 years before deciding it wasn't a fad and got involved.
I was told he bought a personal computer for his home around 2000 or so and after a year he just gave it away because he had no practical idea what he was supposed to do with a computer. Guess he was set in his old ways of doing things and found it hard to connect with idea of using a PC.

From Steve Simmons of Toronto Sun: Quote:
"Some things were meant to be forever, like late nights on The Fan 590 listening to Stormin' Norman Rumack shmooze with the "future hall of famer" Jimmy Devellano or the NHL exec, Rick Dudley. For those of us who can't sleep, and there are many, the abruptly fired Vampire was reason to be awake."

IMHO the problem with ET is that he doesn't have a pleasing radio voice. It has a very shrilly sound to it. In comparison John Oakley on AM640 has a great radio voice.

Everytime ET is on I now just turn off the radio. Rogers with all their millions should have kept Stormin. I'm not an auto racing fan at all. Therefore this weekend was my first real opportunity to listen to ET and probably my last:) .

That makes sense. However Rogers must have to pay the Bobcat, Stellick, Landry, Hogan etc very high salaries as all of these guys have been at the Fan for years.

If Rogers was that cheap they might have fired some of these above mentioned announcers as well as Stormin:confused: ?

While money was likely the primary factor in his dismissal, I think his act had run its course and he was the logical target to get chopped. I remember reading somewhere that he'd brought heat to the station throughout the years with some of his comments and style, and I'm postive he'd been told to tone it down.

Even if he was asked to come back I doubt that he'd come running back lickity split. I don't think his ego would allow it.

Been listening to the Fan since their switch to sports from shitty music in the last century on AM1430. Without any doubt, the worst on air personalities are (or were) Rumack & Mike Hogan. Horrible IMHO. Norm, who cares about Syracuse, particularly in Toronto? Those two belong on Rogers Cable 10 & the fact that they had jobs at all in this industry shows that The Fan is an equal opportunity employer - they'll hire anybody.

(Don't get me started on that blowhard McCown. But I guess his asshole know-it-all-talking-down-from-above style is popular with many of you.)
