Yep it's usually each to catch the fraudsters I think. If a girl on this site is asking you for $ upfront before even meeting then it's a big red flag. It's not the same as reputable sp's asking for a deposit.

I'll share one disappointing tale:
Was talking to this cute mid-20's Indian girl who splits time between here and Montreal. Eventually
she asked if I wanted to go on a date. I said sure! I tried to ask about PPM and she gave a vague answer
like "I'm open to whatever'. I found her really cute so figured it was worth a shot.
We met up at a pub and it was certainly the girl from the pics. Very cute, though it was clear in our conversation
we didn't have all that much in common. She eventually asked what I wanted, and I said my place was just a block
away, but only if we both wanted that. She said something about having to campaign in the morning (this was during
the mayoral election). I saw her to the subway, we hugged, and I never heard from her again.
*To be clear I paid for our drinks/food but didn't pay for her time.
I guess the lesson here is to make sure both people know what they are there for before you meet up!

was asking me questions and such. Met up at a pub and got along right away, conversation flowed

What you can learn about someone else in person is much more than you can online. That's exactly what a meet and greet is for, for both parties to see if there is some chemistry. No expectations of sex and no expectations of allowance.
So you are out a few bucks and a few hours. No big deal. It's like a blind date.

Had the SA account for 6 months. Lots of work and search; many fake photos and profiles; and playing games. I'd say I'm average looking, but not young. Finally met with a cute girl in late 20's in Stratford for coffee; but we didn't click and that was it. I gave up; it was too much work with no success. Back to agencies and indies; timewise it is more economical.
But after reading some success stories on this thread I feel I was doing something wrong on those site

with a SB it can be much more fulfilling and less transactional than seeing an SP.

I will relay a few experiences from the last week.
Girl 1 messaged me on the site first. She was mid 20s and arrived in Canada just over a year ago. We quickly set up a M&G a block from her house. We met for coffee and about 15min later headed back to her place. Multiple good times were had with us both having a little nap in between. We are now trying to schedule a second meeting. She has a little bit of a freaky side as she want to try out a few more things on later meets.
Girl 2 was just a M&G went well, just someone I don't feel right paying. If it was a straight date I would be totally into that. She like girl 1 is a total sweetheart, but more GF material over SB material.
Girl 3 is a total wack job. We agreed to a PPM at 350 but I clear I wanted a M&G before to ensure there is a connection. She was okay with that. She couldn't host but wanted me to travel out to her to meet. After we set it up a few days passed she them brings up wanting 200 just for the M&G. Needless tk say I won't be seeing her.

That sounds fairly typical.
Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't. Definitely, not the same as setting up a meeting with an SP.
BTW, I had a 24-hour date with my SB last week. We did an overnight out of town. Three rounds of fun plus dinner and good conversation. The cost? The usual fee of $500.
