Being at the mercy of a slow checkout line because I guessed wrong. Have 1 big line so it’s first come first served
Interesting concept. They could make this work. Have a long cordoned off line-up area and a series of cashiers who can light up their number sign when they free up so that the next person in line can head over.

This thread reminds me of a song:

I drive really slow in the ultra fast lane
While people behind me are going insane

I use public toilets and I piss on the seat
I walk around in the summer time saying "how about this heat?"

Sometimes I park in handicapped spaces
While handicapped people make handicapped faces

Im an asshole (hes an asshole, what an asshole)
Im an asshole (hes the worlds biggest asshole)
I'm just impressed someone wrote a song about you, TeeJay.

Mythbusters did quite a good episode on this. Serpentine lines move about 10% slower, but scored a higher satisfaction rating because they were perceived as more fair. Episode was called: Clean Up on Aisle 5. I tried to find the video but no luck.

Another advantage of the serpentine line system is that the store can add (or subtract) cashiers seamlessly. In a queue system, people will rush to the new line often ahead of people who have been waiting longer.

I got a ticket for "running a stop sign". I slowed down but didn't come to a complete halt. But cops in general are dicks, as are the people who complain to cops and city councilors about all the shit going on around them so there's some random enforcement. There was apparently one asshole who'd sit on his front lawn and tape people who didn't stop fully and sent the info to police.
Sorry gotta disagree with you on this. We humans develop bad habits that can be negatively reinforced by repetition to the point we perform them subconsciously. There is a physiological term for it which I wasn't able to find in my quick google search - the slang term is mental cruise control.

Process people, the military, safety people and even martial artists are aware of this phenomenon and develop training techniques to avoid habitual/unconscious actions (this is different than the martial artist technique of muscle memory to accelerate an action). For example the conductors of Japanese high speed trains, after a major accident, developed a procedure using a series of hand gestures combined with audible statements to enforce proper process. The gestures/statements are only for themselves (not observed by other conductors) and are designed to keep the proper procedures in their conscious mind. My driver Ed teacher taught us a simple technique to guarantee a complete stop at signs or lights: count 2 in your head, then proceed - it works.

My point: New drivers consciously check for traffic in other directions when stoping, but with time, many drivers get lazy and it becomes an unconscious habit to slow-roll through stop signs. Please take the time and pull-over near a stop sign and observe. You would be amazed how many people perform rolling stops when there are already other cars at the sign. Same with people who make right hand turns at red lights or pull-out in front of oncoming traffic - most are not being aggressive, they have simply developed a bad unconscious habit. It's a huge problem supported by police and insurance statistics. By giving you a ticket, the cop did you a favour, the situation will now be in your conscious mind for the near future and you will be a safer driver.

Canadian gun owners who think the US rules should apply here. Also the Americans who come here and don't like our gun rules. You don't like our gun laws, move south of the border.
People who don't realize that advocating for changes to laws is part of a democratic society.

People who think that moving countries is a trivial matter (are you supplying the green cards?)

People who think that anyone who doesn't agree with him should move to a foreign country.

I'm actually surprised it moves slower

But psychologically it would NEVER work
People hate long lines in general and imagine trying to buy 1 or 2 things then lining up in a huge line at local Walmart

Its ok
With increased minimum wage there will be less cashiers and more self checkouts soon enough

Or just buy your shit online and sit in parking lot to let someone else deliver it to you

People that assume I'm Haïtian, ask me if I am, or start speaking creole to me... Haïtians are the largest Black community in Montreal, but I hate when people assume every Black person is.

Worst; if they don't believe me when I say what I am, or when people ask me how long I've been in this country, like minorities were all born abroad...
I understand by your post this may be a sensitive subject, and I assure you I don't mean to be disrespectful, but I'm hoping you can answer a couple questions for me so I can avoid being disrespectful in the future. Is it the fact that people assume that you are Haitian that you find offensive or that people want to know your back ground? I'm white which means northern European decent (aka boring). I love multiculturalism and would hate to think that me inquiring about your back ground would be viewed as insulting when I am genuinely interested. I've seen an SP that is south american decent that I asked about where her family is from. She told me the islands and I felt a little inadequate because I couldn't remember all the geography on the spot but i had a general idea. Again I'd hate to think this was viewed as disrespectful so I'm hoping you can offer some guidance on how I can approach this in the future. Thanks!

Um - Nope. Still roll my stops. Still check for other cars. There's also a difference between running and rolling. I didn't run it, I rolled it. The only reason to come to a full stop is pedestrians or cars turning in front of you. Bottom line, it's a cash grab. It won't change driver behavior.

I speed read through this thread, so pardon me if I'm repeating anything here. Here's some of mine...

1. People who spit out their gum or spit on the sidewalk.

2. It's pronounced Porscheh not Porsche. You pronounce the "e".

3. No such thing as "really" or "very" unique. Unique means "one".

4. Drivers and cyclists who don't signal. How fucking lazy are you? Or is simply driving your vehicle consuming 95% of your mental capacity that you can't stick out your arm or move your pinky to let vehicles know what you're about to do? If you can't signal, you're a reject!

5. People who walk 3 or 4 abreast on the sidewalk and force the single pedestrian walking the opposite direction to move out of the way. What I do, when I see these self absorbed assholes walking toward me is simply stop as they approach, forcing them to walk around me. I look them straight in the eye and they usually figure it out.

6. People who try to walk into an elevator before you exit. Excuse me, fuck off!

7. People like TeeJay who refuse to move over to for faster traffic.

8. People who speed up when you try to pass them on a 2 lane highway. That's attempted murder in my books.

9. Hipsters. Although, some of them make great food!

10. Fake tits.

The problem is that is easy to miss seeing other cars if you don't come to a complete stop. Most cars these days have wide A pillars. Cars approaching from the side can be completely hidden by the A pillar and can be missed if the driver just takes a quick look.

Only had this happen to me twice, but both times I slowed down and ducked back behind him. I'm not going to risk my life because some guy, whose giant ego can't survive being passed, is being a dick.
Actually, a third time he was slow to speed up, so I ended up ducking in front of him before he got to me. That pissed him off even more, so he re-passed me and cut me off. Fun times!

Yet you didn't see the cop who was close enough to observe you breaking the law. Clearly you didn't thoroughly check.

I know several people who still text and drive. Like you they claim they are perfectly safe, yet I've seen them cross lane lines, brake late and almost hit the car in front of them, delay start at a green, etc. I wonder what an outside observer would say about your driving?

I have two family members who are Actuaries for insurance companies, their statistics clearly show that "lazy stops" (i.e. at red lights, stop signs and pulling out in front of other traffic) are one of the largest causes of traffic accidents and pedestrians hits. My Police family members believe "mental cruise control" (I still can't remember the proper term) is a huge problem on the roads. The most common justifications they hear from people "I didn't see the other car / sign / light.

You are a dangerous driver - an accident waiting to happen. You can't overcome human nature and your arrogance only makes it worse.

There's also a difference between running and rolling. I didn't run it, I rolled it.
Sure whatever. Go ahead and try to argue that with the judge.

Bottom line, it's a cash grab. It won't change driver behavior.
Wrong. It's your flawed human nature supported by years of accident statistics and police observations. People develop bad habits, they get lazy, we're easily distracted and we daydream. It gets worse at dusk and at night and with age. Arrogance makes it worse.

Haha - you're quoting insurance company actuaries? Think you just killed your case there.

I'm actually a very good driver who is proactive instead of reactive (as they teach in Young Drivers). I haven't had an accident in 15 years, and that was when I was a new driver. I actually avoid being in a large number of accidents due to the fact that I recognize and anticipate bad lane changes, people who take turns when they shouldn't, etc. Maybe you develop habits, are lazy, easily distracted, and daydream. But that's you and you can't speak for others nor quote statistics that may apply to a general populace but not necessarily to an individual.

The cop was pulled over to the side in a stealth car. Do I need to take notice of every single parked car that's in the vicinity? No.
