Cannot get my taskmgr to work either by ctr-alt-del or by direct access. Cannot find the taskmgr.exe file. How I did have another program that was great and replaced it but now I cant find that either

Any suggestions other than re-installing windows?

Reinstall taskmgr.exe by extracting it from the Windows XP CD.
Stuff it in C:\WINDOWS\system32\taskmgr.exe

Also check this out -http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm (see Enable the task manager. download and run it from file manager)

Sounds like you may have a virus. What are you running for virus protection? AVG is not bad if you don't have one yet.

Running AVG and Windows Defender - nothing showed up when I scanned -

Can I extract the file from the windows XP CD with installing - last time I tried to reinstall operating system something screwed up and it cost me $170 to get it installed by MDG.

Here is what the XP CD looks like:

E:\I386>dir taskmgr*
Volume in drive E is 20070323105202
Volume Serial Number is 8E1C-9134

Directory of E:\I386

08/08/2004 09:30 AM 51,242 TASKMGR.EX_
08/08/2004 09:30 AM 2,816 TASKMGR.HL_
08/08/2004 09:30 AM 26,263 TASKMGRW.CH_
3 File(s) 80,321 bytes
0 Dir(s) 0 bytes free

E:\I386>expand /?
Microsoft (R) File Expansion Utility Version 5.1.2600.0
Copyright (C) Microsoft Corp 1990-1999. All rights reserved.

Expands one or more compressed files.

EXPAND [-r] Source Destination
EXPAND -r Source [Destination]
EXPAND -D Source.cab [-F:Files]
EXPAND Source.cab -F:Files Destination

-r Rename expanded files.
-D Display list of files in source.
Source Source file specification. Wildcards may be used.
-F:Files Name of files to expand from a .CAB.
Destination Destination file | path specification.
Destination may be a directory.
If Source is multiple files and -r is not specified,
Destination must be a directory.

Run the expand command against the TASKMGR.EX_ file

Something like this:

expand TASKMGR.EX_ C:\WINDOWS\system32\taskmgr.exe

Grab the HLP file as well if you missing that one..

If you are at SP2 (service pack 2) you may want to reinstall that cuz you would lose it on that file unless you grab the SP2 version of the program.

No need to reinstall the O/S unless it is completely buggered but you can usually do a repair action if thats the case anyways..Let us know if you wanna do a repair and I will dig up the instructions..

Get "Process Explorer" - it's way better.

You shouldn't replace your task manager with anything else unless you're familiar with it. I'm sure it's available for download somewhere if you look. As for alternatives, I use Process Explorer and a command line tool from Beyond Logic.
