I know this is a bit last minute but here is the story. My tax return was filed a week ago VIA EFILE, but I forgot to make one deduction on it. How would I fix this?? I can't file another tax return.

Its easier for you to file a T1ADJ form. You can download it of the CRA website and its pretty straightforward on how to use it.

Wait until you get your notice of assessment, then file a T1-ADJ. You can download and fill in the form directly from CRA's website.

You don't even have to wait. He might nip the NOA in the bud if he files the T1-ADJ right away. They might combine both before the NOA or subsequently issue a Notice of Re-Assessment so that he pays less tax or gets more of a refund without having to be 1st assessed without the missed deduction.

I've filed T1-AJD right after I realized that I was missing a few deductions. They will send you a separate letter confirming receipt of your 'additional info'. Then just wait for the results.

That may work, but it is not the proper way to do it as you may just get your T1-ADJ returned to you saying that it cannot be processed as the return has not been assessed, especially if it was paper-filed.

If you file electronically and then immediately mail in the T1-ADJ yes it will likely work, especially early on in the season as it only takes less than 2 weeks to do the original assessment (I Netfiled in mid-March and it was done in 4 days) so it'll be done by the time the T1-ADJ arrives. However any refund from the original assessment will go out so you still might get an bill (if the reassessment ends up with a DR balance)

At any rate, they will not stop an assessment mid-run to do an adjustment to it. The system does not allow it.

Sounds like an easy question for CRA's 1-800 folks.

Or for those not wishing to call in. On page 55 of the T1 General guide:

If you need to make a change to any return you have sent us, do not file another return for that year. You should wait until you receive your notice of assessment before requesting any change to a return that has not been processed. You can change your return by going to our My Account page, or by sending both of the following to your tax centre:

a completed Form T1-ADJ, T1 Adjustment Request, or a signed letter providing the details of your request (including the years of the returns you want us to change), your social insurance number, your address, and a telephone number where we can reach you during the day; and
supporting documents for the changes you want to make and, if you have not sent them to us before, supporting documents for your original claim.

Note
Send your Form T1-ADJ or letter separately from your return for 2010.

Only requests relating to tax years ending in any of the 10 calendar years before the year you make the request will be considered. For example, a request made in 2011 must relate to the 2001 or a later tax year to be considered.

It usually takes eight weeks before we complete the adjustment and mail you a notice of reassessment.
