I really hope police lock this down and start arresting people for being a nuisance, disturbing the peace and/or dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. Driving too slowly on highways is an offence too. Let's start giving out demerit points like it's Christmas.

This is ridiculous. The one time we have thousands flocking to our city, they want to piss tourists off.

I hate demonstrations like this. Complete and utter waste of time and energy. The only people who suffer are the ones who aren't in a position to make a difference.

This will not happen if the cab drivers bring their wives, kids and elderly parents to the protest. If it does happen, the liberal lefties will immediately and loudly scream "POLICE STATE". Our neutered police force will do nothing. The last thing they need is more complaints.

Remember the Tamil protest on the Gardiner a few years back? They place old women and kids at the front of the protest facing the police. The police stood down at that time.

I sympathize with the drivers. They are following the rules and Uber is not. Also, driving a cab is a starter job for many non-white immigrants and some starving students.

Your friend hasn't done the math. Rates are $0.80/km in Toronto. Uber takes 25%, so now you only get $0.60/km. Fuel, maintenance and wear and tear on your car is at least $0.30/km. That means you're taking home only $0.30/km. The scary part is that you don't get paid for the distance to go pick someone up, which can sometimes be a longer trip than the actual paid one! The only time it's worth it to drive for Uber is when surge pricing kicks in.

Uber is a great idea: it's flexible, it's dynamic, it's quality, and it's value. But I think they're totally taking advantage of their drivers and are relying on them remaining ignorant of the real take-home pay. I'm not sure why they've lowered rates so much; they're pretty much half the price of a cab. The only thing I can think of is that they have a long-term goal of convincing people they are better off not buying a vehicle, but instead using Uber for their driving needs.

Why have they cut rates so much is the same reason as Saudis have kept pumping oil despite the world drowning in oil - to take over market share.

Ultimately, Uber wants to be the sole transportation provider, you're right.

When Uber cut fares in Washington D.C. last February, the Observer spoke to several drivers and learned the price reduction had left many scrambling to make ends meet. The move was a tactic by the multi-billion dollar company to gain ground in the taxi app war, but this customer perk came at a heavy cost to the company’s workforce. Now, following the recent fare cuts in more than 100 cities, Uber’s employees are being exploited nationwide, and to an even greater extent. Fares have been cut by as much as 45 percent in some cities, and while Uber is guaranteeing this will actually lead to larger earnings for drivers, the opposite has already proven to be true—drivers are reporting they’re making as little as $2.89 per hour.

There are other ride share companies like Lyft. If Uber underpaid drivers or overcharged customers they would lose to competition that doesn't.

The taxi industry is an outdated model that WILL be displaced by ride sharing, but Uber isn't the only five sharing competitor.

I don't believe Lyft has entered Canada yet. It looks like they're waiting to see how things shake out here first with Uber.

That is true, the point was that killing off the taxi industry doesn't kill off competition. Ford did not jack up prices when it killed off the horse and buggy industry, it continued to compete but against new auto firms.
