Say it ain't so.

I can imagine a tennis player not playing his/her best because of injuries, bored, late for a hot date, etc. but intentionally throwing a match?

Next, are they going to say some players are on PED's?

Why not? There's a lot of money on the line.

For $50K? Only for the players who feel they have no shot of ever pulling the money of Federer, Djokovic. Nadal & Murray. So in other words I think it rarely impacts the course of any high profile, well attended tournaments.

But I can see the appeal for some of the players on the outside looking in. Or those who don't devote themselves to competing 100% of the time anyway. The surprising thing is that there would be enough betting on matches between also-rans to make it worth paying $50K a piece to fix the match.

They shaved points in the college hoops for less.

If you google around, Davydenko is one of the suspects.
The 4 top male tennis players (Federer, Djokovic, Nadal and Murray) have created such a distance between themselves and the rest, they were monopolizing all the prize money. So it would seem the rest of the pack could make a little side pot throwing games.

Federer is right, they should name names otherwise it puts a cloud of suspicion on everyone and the sport.

In theory, yes.

But they'd better damn right otherwise they are leaving themselves open to large lawsuits.

I heard there was one male player who was down love-2 in sets and simply didn't even try to win in the 3rd set. Not sure if he threw the match but it was so obvious he wasn't even trying to win in the 3rd set. Aren't you suppose to try your best at all times, win or lose?

This was or is common in the mid levels of soccer too, players that made little money would agree to it. Joker was offered 200k he said, peanuts to him. Horse racing is also known to be fixed.

Can Nadal prolong his career by playing doubles?
I think a player of his quality would have more pride than that.

Tell me how many past multiple Grand Slam singles winners/world #1's have gone on to play doubles to "extend their career"?

It's actually a ludicrous proposition.

On the other hands guys like Federer and Conners kept playing after they stopped being number 1. On the other other hand I think Sampas and Borg retired when they felt they could no longer be number 1. Who knows?

Which is much different than embarrassing themselves by resorting to doubles, as you suggested.
I don't know if this match is fixed or not but Dimitrov is a 7-1 underdog against Federer tonight! I'm putting a couple bucks on Dimitrov, what the heck.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martina_Navratilova_career_statistics
Martina Navratilova extended her career by excelling in doubles during the last few years of her career.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Chelios
Chris Chelios finished his HOF career in the minors.
Good call on Martina.

Martina, however, did not do it simply to extend her career. Aside from being #1 singles for over 300 weeks, she had always been an excellent doubles player, ranked #1 for over 200 weeks. She was establishing a record for total grand slam wins that will never be matched. She won a total of 59 grand slam titles, many of them after she'd finished playing singles. So in a sense she extended her career with doubles but she had been and still was the best in the world at doubles. I don't recall Nadal ever playing doubles in a grand slam. So for Nadal it would just be, as you put it, with no shame, just hanging on. Martina was far from just hanging on. She had a significant purpose.

Just as with Nadal, I don't recall Chelios ever playing doubles either.

Not purely throwing matches... now days you can merely throw individual points with In-Play betting. Probably makes it a lot easier to approach some of these players.
