One of the greatest tacticians to ever play football, Andrea Pirlo, is calling it a career. Man, could The Azzurri use him now!

When he arrived at Juventus, Gio had no dead ball skills, he learned from the best.
He was an all time great, OK. I wonder why he needed to descend to the MLS after his illustrious career ended.

But innovations in the game comes from Spain and Italy.
Spain yes, but Italy not too sure. Italy still have to play off for a spot in the world cup.
England have youngsters who have won their respective world cup tournaments.
Man City stand a good chance for the European Champions Cup. PSG is another quality side. Should be interesting this season.

Italy made inventions many years ago.

Italy lost to Sweden today; they are toast this year. Even if they squeeze into the world cup, they will not get far, the way they play now. They are an old team, Buffon is 39. Does Italy not have any younger goal keepers? (not that Buffon made any mistakes)

Italy has some good young goalkeepers, Donnarumma in particular. Buffon has stayed on longer than he should.

I've been saying it for awhile now, Ventura is in over his head. Italy won't qualify, there's been a malaise in the Azzurri camp for awhile now. They don't deserve to go to Russia. As for Pirlo coming to MLS, that's not a surprise. He's always been a diplomat.

His wine has become popular, but is the life of a vintner enough for him?

Growing grapes is the only thing worthwhile in retirement.

Today is a day that could live in infamy for The Azzurri. I would start the young giants in midfiled: Spinazzola, Pellegrini alongside Jiorginho as the distributor. DDR sits on the bench - sad but true. And The Pharaoh would start up front over Gallo, I love Rooster Belotti but he's not on his game at the moment.

As much as I hate to see the swedes win, I think the ageing Azzuris will need some good luck to pull this one off.

Ventura should have been fired after the heinous tactical error against Spain. He played the 4-2-4 against a team of horses in midfield, Verratti is undersized and DDR is 34 - it was a foregone conclusion. The FIGC chose to not to go that route and they will live with the consequences. The kicker is Ventura has more talent to work with then Conte did at the Euro16, his bench is the future of Italy.

I still think Italy will pull it off today, but they're doing this the hard way.

I'll be tuning in at 2:45 pm

Worst choke job I've ever seen! When you hold on to the ball for longer than three seconds you become predictable, the Swedes had plenty of time to adjust. At least Buffon stood in front of the press, Ventura ran to the nearest bomb shelter.

The Swedes showed the Azzurri how to play catenaccio. Of course the fallout has only just begun.

Carlo Ancelotti will probably take over the program but if I was in his shoes I'd do what Marcello Lippi did. The FIGC had a set of coaches that worked cheap in place, Lippi said "fuck that" I want my coaching staff. In the end the FIGC ponied up the cash for Lippi's assistants.

Today we will see if Denmark can beat Ireland. In the first leg, Denmark played no better than Italy against a predictable Irish side.
